I am so happy i found this site.
I have been dealing with AA for over 15 years. I have always had small spots here and there, but they were easily hidden, Now I am at the point where I have more sports that hair. It takes a long time to do my hair to make sure all the sport are hidden and my hair in pined in place. I also have to wear a head band every day to cover some of the larger spots.
I have a few wigs, but really don't like them. To much hair, to heavy, itchy, ride back, etc.
I know there are some really good hair systems out there, but they are SO expensive!

So here is my question, when (if ever) did you get to the point where you just shaved it all off?
Any thoughts, feedback would be appreciated.

I decided to wear a wig to cover up all the bare patches, in the hope that it would all just grow back and I would then take off my wig to reveal a new shorter hair style. That moment never came unfortunately, and I waited until the very last strands of hair were ready to fall before I shaved them off.
It wasn't liberating, it wasn't a 'shaving party' or anything glamorous. I was sick of seeing my spiky bits staring at me in the mirror. I simply picked up my husbands hair clippers and shaved a zero over my head.
That was that.

My husband was a bit surprised when he came home to see my smooth head, and my friends said it looked much better.

3 months later, I have had no regrowth, I only wear my wig to work or to go out on the weekends, and wear a scarf or knitted hat otherwise (it is winter in the southern hemisphere at the moment!).
As I have lost all of my body hair also, that was a bit of a different story - I got the razor out after two large patches appeared, and good riddance to that!

I like the smooth feel of my skin without hair now. It is almost a habit now to relax on the lounge watching tv and rubbing my smooth head.

Now that my head is bare, I have ordered a custom fit vacuum hair prosthesis. I am looking forward to it.
Hi Liz,

Please check out my page, photos, and my YouTube videos that are referenced on my page. We had very similar experiences - I had easily hidden patchy spots for 7 years, then rapid loss of all hair in late 2007. The decision to shave in Jan. 08 when I still had quite a bit of hair was absolutely the right thing for me. I felt so much better, and no longer had to be depressed watching the bald spots expand. I hate the way wigs feel, and can't wear them.

You should also have a look at the wonderful discussions in the Group "Sisterhood of Women Who Shaved" on AW, if you haven't already.

Best wishes,
Mary
Hi Liz

This is a very personal decision and all I can really say is you will take away the last of your hair when you feel it is the right time.

Rosy :)
Once mine got so thin you could see most of my scalp ( within 2 months of it starting to fall out) my friends and I one afternoon shaved my head on the deck. I guess once it is so noticeable and you are ready to wear a wig (if you choose to) it could be time.
