Hi
I think it is really good to investigate the options that may suit you...you will do this when it is right for you. Write a list of the things you would like a wig to achieve for you. Then find out as much as possible (before buying), about the wig you may think will suit.
Some of the things that I would think are important are: Security, Longevity, durability, lifelike, easycare, comfortable. It is an adjustment to start wearing a wig...but in my experience it can be helpful, even though wig wearing is definately not for everyone.
I also understand how difficult it is to think that a wig is necessary and your hair isn't doing what you would like it to do (grow:(). I remember (like it was yesterday, that terrible thud of realisation I had when we finally decided my daughter needed and wanted a wig) Be kind to yourself and just take your time. Don't rush.
We did find something that has worked extremely well for her over the years (11 years now) and we (my daughter and I) have never regretted the decision we made....even though it wasn't an easy one at the time.

Looks like we're in the same place, mine is getting just horrible. I went an purchased a wig online - but I spent a good 2 weeks researching! What a pain. I tried to find a local place, but the only one I found didn't carry the brands I was looking at.
I started at Wigs.com, looking though the styles, colors, and videos. I found that they had the best site layout and had the most information stated. Once I found one that I liked, I looked elsewhere and found a shop with the wig at half price, so I bought it there. Took about a week to get it.
I found that I may not the best at measuring my head though - lol. I think I'm between average and large, but I should be okay with the average sized one I got once I shave my head.
This is the one I ordered: http://www.wigs.com/symmetry-by-gabor.html
I think it looks pretty realistic. I already know I can pull off that short of a cut, so I wasn't worried about the length.
I agree... join the wigsupport website! I love wigs. I have only worn synthetic. There are a TON of different choices out there. Just try to do some research before you buy one. Try to figure out what you need from it. The more natural, the more that it will cost. I like to purchase mine online, but I wouldn't suggest that until you find what you like the most. Try to look online at pictures to see if there is a style/brand that you like a lot. Go to a wig store, and ask to try on all of the different kinds! As to when to start wearing one... I would say when you are ready. Try to find a wig you love first. Then, try wearing it for a couple of hours, and increase it each day so you get used to it. Take a deep breath! We are here for you.
