My father-in-law is in his 70s and has been a barber his whole life. Back in the day, when a fellow would get a spot of AA, that fellow would go to the barber who would dab the spot with white iodine. Every few weeks that fellow would come back in and get another treatment of white iodine dabed on his balding area. According to my father-in-law, the applications of white iodine really worked! Unfortunately, nowadays you can't even purchase white iodine over the counter. Drugies have found ways to use white iodine in making their drugs. So, no more over the counter sales of white iodine! Sea Kelp tablets have a high concentration of iodine, but can cause thyroid problems and the tablets are not recommened for children. I guess the closest we can get for children may the Sea Kelp shampoo? A fellow from another website tried tinted iodine but did not have any results. Has anyone else heard of the healing effects of white iodine?

Never heard of this, but I am interested in seeing if others have. Hopefully someone will respond
Hello there JeezLouise! You know, the first time my daugther got AA over two years ago, I even searched everywhere in the interent to try and see if I could get White Iodine from another country ~ to no avail. It will be interesting to see if anyone else has more information . . .
Hi Lynn

I am quite doubtful that this would be a cure or even a treatment. It tends to pop up every now and again as a treatment option. I have never heard of it working for anyone for any length of time.

The horrible reality of AA, AT, AU is that there is no cure at the moment. Prescribed treatments do sometimes work (steroids etc.), but nothing seems to work forever unless you have gone into a natural remission. With Medical Prescribed treatments you have to be careful with children and in my case I opted not to try anything.

In the last six years my daughter has grown her hair back twice and is once again regrowing hair. Between each regrowth bout she has gone AU. If she had been taking any sort of treatment or medication I'm pretty sure I would have thought that was the reason for regrowth. But we were using absolutely nothing. She was just going and is still going in and out of natural remission.

If you have AA(patches) you have quite a high chance that you will go into remission. AT and AU it becomes a little more difficult. If you have this condition as a child it seems that it can be more aggressive. If you have ezcema, or a family history of autoimmune disease there is a higher chance that the person's AA will be more aggressive and extensive.

In saying all that - no-one really knows what is going to happen with AA. That's the hardest thing to cope with. If we knew I think we could deal to it. But we don't.

Hello there Rose Marie! I appreciate your input! The first time around, my daugther was under the care of Stanford Professor of Dermatology Alfred T. Lane. Professor Lane believed that the steriod injections (if the child is over ten) are beneficial in slowing the progression of AA. It was his opinion that the more hair you loose, the more difficult it is to get back. With my daughter's first round with AA, Professor Lane had us treat her with Roggaine and a steriod cream. He told us that he didn't know how long it would take, but he would get her hair to grow back, and he did! At one of the Parent Support Groups I attended at Stanford University, Dr. Vera Wang, the President of the NAAF was in attendance. She stated positive opinions regarding Men's Rogaine for the treatment of AA, even for children. White Iodine is the same as Tinture Iodine, only White Iodine is colorless. I know there is no cure for AA. However, if a person with AA makes the choice to treat AA, there are options. Congratulations to your daughter regarding her regrowth. She is very lucky to have an informed mother!! Take care!
I have an update! What was once named "White Iodine" is now named "Decolorized Iodine." You can purchase decolorized iodine at Walmart. If Walmart does not have Decolorized Iodine in stock, you can request that it is ordered for you. Decolorized Iodine costs $2 or $3 dollars per two ounce bottle. I was told that my order of Decolorized Iodine will be in this coming Monday. So, if there are no snags in my receiving the White Iodine, the kids have agreed that we will apply the White Iodine to their spots with a Q-tip, once a day during the evening time (we will discontinue Rogainie). We will try this treatment for two months. If we see no results, then we will go back to Rogaine. I wish all of us luck in our treatment, or non-treatment choices while dealing & coping with AA!! Also, I will post an update in two months. I wishe you all the best!!
Walgreen's pharmacy will order it for you if they don't have it in stock.
Hi there Kayreyn! Thanks for your responses. The kids and I decided to stick with Rogaine (and of course, they still get the shots every four weeks). It takes four darned months for Rogaine to begin working, and we are into months five & six. It's just a hard decision to make, as far as which treatment to choose. I'd better run & finish getting ready for work. Take care sweetie & have a great Thanksgiving :o)
Thank you Lynn. I just have a good feeling about this White Iodine, so we're going to try it. The Rogain just scares me. Let me know how it works out for you (I hope you see great results)! I'll keep everyone posted on the white iodine
Hello there Kayreyn! I hope all is well. I thought I should add, through my internet searches, I read part of an article where doctors in India treat with white iodine. I don't remember the source, but I read doctors in India treat children under 10, beginning with white iodine. They apply it in the evening time. If they don't see results within two months, then they move on to other treatments. The doctors also used tea tree oil shampoo. I recently tought my son had a bad reaction to tea tree shampoo, only to learn that he actually had lice! His best friend and that kid's mom travel often to other countries. Argghhhhh! I can't believe she let her son stay the night at my house while her son had lice!! Anyhow, after two lice shampoo treatments, and after washing all blankets & pillows in the house - I hope we are lice free (not such a nice holiday weekend!). The shots & rogaine are helping my daugther. The shots & rogaine are helping my son, but he is slowly loosing about as much hair that is growing back! I fear & know both kids would loose a lot more hair without the shots. I can only hope the experts are right about the Rogaine (that it works), but do not plan to have the kids continue the Rogaine treatment for longer than a year, and at that point will revisit the white iodine treatment. Please do keep in touch, and let me know your daughter's results with white iodine. God bless you both & stay strong for each of those cute kids!!
Hi Lynn,
Just wanted to touch base with you again, I haven't posted in a while. I must say the white iodine has seriously slowed down the shedding! It's been the only thing so far to slow it down that much. I'm also noticing little blond hairs filling in in some spots. I am so thankful that you posted this question about white iodine, I wouldn't have tried it. God bless you too, and you take care of your beautiful kids!
Hi there Kayreyn! What super wonderful news!! I'm so happy for you and your daughter :o) I'm so glad the white (or decolorized) iodine worked. Thank God!! My kids are still on the route of shots & roggaine. Both kids seem to be having more regrowth than loss, so far. Please do continue to keep me posted. God bless you and your kids too! I hope you all have a positive & happy holiday season!! Let's keep in touch!!
Is this a different topic??? Hmmm. I thought I had already posted about this, but anyway here it goes . . .

My nephew has AA and decolorized iodine has worked so far. We still continue to use the prescription medicine and our doctor was particularly interested in using white iodine to see if it worked. She told us to try it and she lowered the dosage of the other stuff to test it out. To make long story short, she recommends it now as a secondary option in addition to medicine cause it did show to work in most cases. However, upon discovering this site I noticed how hard white iodine can be to find in some states so, I thought I would share where I get mine:

My nephew was doing so well that he told some of his friends about it and they too have recently begun trying it. I'll tell them to come here and post their experiences with it.
