I have been wearing wigs for about three years now and have lost all my hair to alopecia areata and scarring alopecia. I have tried a variety of wigs over the years and found the most beautiful unit from Follea. I am African American and do have challenges with the transparent lace matching my skin. When I requested pricing to customize the unit with a strip of brown lace temple to temple I was surprised to find out the 4 figure price tag for this minor change.

Can anyone recommend a wig vendor that has units for people of color, that grip the scalp, for a reasonable price? I am willing to pay a few thousand for a great unit but not thousands to customize.

I know they don't grip and you have to use tape and adhesive, but I've had great luck with XCSunny lace wigs. I am African American and I get their dark lace which matches my skin well. You may be able to disguise the lace by applying foundation powder in your skin tone in the part. HTH!

I've never heard of XCSunny lace wigs but I will try them out. California lace wigs is typically what I've used in past but I'm willing to try something different. Does the ashesive tape really secure the wig for 10-12 hours? Thank you for the input.

Yes, it does. It depends on the tape and adhesive you use and how it reacts with your skin's chemistry. You have to make sure to wash the inside of the wig (the cap) with blue Dawn dishwashing liquid when you first get it because there's a film that will make the tape or adhesive not stick well - this is with any lace wig when it comes from the factory. A lot depends on weather (hot climate where you may sweat a lot), activity, exposure to water, etc., in addition to your skin's chemistry that will determine if the tape/adhesive breaks down quicker or not. Since I am bald, I use a scalp protector around the perimeter,, wait for that to dry, then apply waterproof adhesive. I put Supertape (works best with my skin chemitsry) directly on the back of the unit on the lace, but put the Supertape on in the front. Then I apply the unit. I can go two weeks with minor touch-ups in the back. HTH!

That's impressive. Why can I buy the supertape? Thanks.

Hairdirect.com sells it.

Freedom wigs

Thank you Pamela I will check them out.

Hi you can try this wig company by the name of silkawigs, i used to buy really expensive wig as well, but I stop because i was not able to afford it anymore. So now i used this company to make my custom wig for me, also they have different lace colors and wig caps for you to choose from; so i'm very happy with their service so far, also my custom wigs from them doesn't get matted and tangled up which is a big plus for me.

Try contacting Amy Gibson of CreatedHair -- she has a variety of styles of hair and caps and can discuss customization.
