My alopecia began 3 months ago and now I have a huge area of missing hair at the back of my head. The comb over look is no longer working. I suck at scarves. So, I am now looking at wigs. There is no way I can afford a human hair wig but I am looking at a high quality synthetic. Is it worth it? Right now I can't help but feel people are wondering why I am wearing a scarf or hat but will I be just as self conscience as to whether they are wondering if I am wearing a wig?

6 months Aimee?! Mine never last longer than max. 3 months. I wear short wigs too so please tell me how you do it!
I'd say go for a wig :) When I wore my first wig outside, I literally walked so far on the inside of the sidewalk I touched the house walls with my shoulder. I was so worried people would know. My mom told me to look up & step away from the dang walls LOL. Let me tell you though, people won't be able to tell. You might think so but they won't know if you are just passing them at the store & such. Once you get used to your wig you will be confident wearing it. I like to buy my wigs from bestwigoutlet.com, very reasonable prices since it's an outlet & once you register at their site, they e-mail you 30% off coupons all the time. I always get my wigs around $140 on bestwigoutlet.com, when they're usually twice as much on other sites.
My daughter has gorgeous human hair wig that we get from a chinese web site and pay $425 for. They are super long or they would be cheaper.
Since you have hair missing from the back of the head, you could try a 'fall', 3/4 or headband type wig instead of a full wig. They also don't usually cost as much. Have fun, even create a new look! I like the Paula Young website for affordable wigs and hairpieces.
Wigs can be amazing and lots of fun or they can be a hassle and feel like another thing to worry about. Just try to find one that you feel confident and comfortable wearing. I currently have a human hair vacuum seal one that I got from Locks of Love and its very comfortable and looks natural so I am able to feel confident in it and just live life and have the freedom to bring up alopecia when *I* want to :) I have had wigs in the past that looked very "wiggy" and felt uncomfortable and this caused me a lot of stress and discomfort in everyday life. I think this might turn a lot of people off wigs but I would encourage you to try out some and see if they're right for you!
