Wigs?
Hi, all,
I am about to give up trying to do anything with my failing hair, and am considering shaving it off and wearing a wig instead. Do any of you know anything about wigs and where I could get a good, and hopefully not too expensive, one? I'd really appreciate it.

There are several women on here who wear wigs. Before you purchase anything, you might try to figure out what you want. There are many different choices. The link to a wig review on my blog is below. That is one option. It is a synthetic, standard cap wig. You can find that particular wig online for less than $100. I would suggest that you visit a local wig store, and ask if you can try on all of the different types. Try to do some research into it before you make a purchase. I paid double for a wig in a wig store that I could have bought online. However, with a wig store, you get to see the wig on in person before you buy it. I could go on and on. There is a lot to know, but maybe that helps!

I am originally from the UK, but now live in Canada. I am getting the impression that people here are more superficial here than there, but I could be wrong. I think that regardless, a bald woman is still less 'acceptable' than a bald man, which royally pisses me off as it's all about double standards again. So, like you, I find it's not easy being open about losing one's hair. And so, I haven't quite decided what to do yet - still have to find the 'perfect' wig for me!

You're welcome! Most people are shocked. The majority of people have NO idea that I wear wigs. I wore a long brown wig, then a shorter red wig, then a even shorter red wig with bangs, then a longer blonde wig in the span of 8 months, and my co-workers had NO clue. Wigs are very realistic these days. I would say that they are curious or shocked, but I haven't received a negative response yet. If you have someone respond negatively, just tell yourself that they are ignorant or jealous. They wish that they could have such beautiful hair.

I understand where you are. I just ventured into wigs a month ago. I did not shave my head (I wear a wig cap) and I tape it on. I am still struggling trying to find what is the right onw for me. I have a Jon Renau one that is synthetic that I like for now while I am trying to figure things out. But it was a good immediate solution! I ordered a few from gallery if wigs and tried them on and sent back the ones that did not work. Again, I do not know much about them at all yet - still learning! But you are not alone.

Anne, I wish I had bought a wig months before I purchased one. My first experience and I think the best one for purchasing a first wig is to go to a wig salon and just try them on. You can always find the ones you really like on a wig website (they are much cheaper) and I've purchased some from Ebay. I will admit I've bought some that I couldn't stand after I got them (ordering just because they look pretty on line), but I give them to a charity. I do believe the best advice I can personally give you is when you find one you really love, buy several of them in the same style because some of them will be discontinued later and you won't be able to find them. My very favorite is Sandie by Noriko and I have 4 of these (different colors). My next favorite is Gala and I have 5 of these in different colors. Not sticking to the advice I'm giving you, but bought a monofilament on Ebay for $59 just this week and hoping it works. I love the monofilament look, but unfortunately Sandie and Gala do not come in monofilaments. Good luck in finding the perfect wig!

Thank you for your advice. I will look into this. I've also heard that Sears has a selection of wigs as well, so I'll investigate there as well.
Are you going to the alopecia support group meeting in July?

Welcome, Anne! Choosing "the perfect wig" can be quite an experience, and it is not easy. I've worn wigs for 20+ years, and in those years, there have been a lot of "misses", and finally, a few "hits."
I agree with the ladies that say try wigs on in a wig salon, and if possible, write down the names and see if you can find them online where they will be less expensive....sometimes as much as 70 to 80% less expensive. And try on a variety...synthetic, human hair, and human hair/synthetic blends. But be wary of inexpensive human hair wigs, because the tangle, etc., etc., and end up looking like you're wearing a "dead animal" on your head. My personal preference is high quality synthetics. It is also my personal preference to completely shave my head (which I have done weekly), and to wear a wig cap. I would much rather look at my bald head than ugly patches. Again, personal preference.
And remember, too, that you can also have any wig that you purchase cut to fit your facial features. Very seldom do "wigs out of the box or off the shelf" look "natural."
I have seven wigs -- all in the same style and color, and all cut to fit my facial features. I wear them "in rotation", so they don't end up looking like that "dead animal" I previously mentioned. I purchased them from wwww.beautytrends.com.
