Wigs with realistic parts?
I have been recently diagnosed with Alopecia and have thinning hair all over my head. I have probably lost about half my hair. I can barely get by without a wig, but I know it won't be long till I need one. I know zero about them, but have been trying to research online.
I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. All of my life I have had long hair which I wear parted in the middle, or barely off to the side. This whole thing would be much less traumatic to me if I could get a wig in basically the same style, or at least with a realistic part.
The wigs I look at online either seem to have no part or else look fake. Is there a type, or brand, of wig which lets you have a visible part that looks realistic? I'd also like to be able to pull the front of my hair back in a clip, but I can live without that, and realize that is asking too much probably.
Mainly, I just want a wig that looks the most real around the hairline, and that has a part that looks real. Am I out of luck or can anyone recommend anything?

I'm going to pass on my personal opinion around hairlines and wigs. You do have choices around this, but in my opinion all wigs including the lace type wig look better with a slight (baby hair type fringe) (then you can pull it back from you face as you use to.
Most wigs have limitations and what you need to work out is what your needs are around those things. I know that sounds very negative, but the reality is that no matter how good a wig is ...it is still a wig. Do your research and be very thoughtful around the options. Think about the hair (synthetic, human) ...human hair in particular is not equal, there are really two types of human hair processed and unprocessed....learn the differences between these two choices and what that will mean to you.
I'm going to put a picture up of the wigs that my daughters wears. (Freedom Wigs) Showing the implantation all over the wig and also a middle parting option that one of the Freedom Independent Agents wears (Jody Gorski).
This is a Freedom wig (the hair used is 100% unprocessed virgin hair). It is very secure without tapes and glues...but to wear this type of wig you have to have no hair or be willing to take away the hair you do have...maybe not an option for you at this time (I don't know). Rosy, thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me, twice! I appreciate your honesty,and think I might need to adjust my expectations and realize that there isn't going to be a part that looks like the real one I have now. The girl in the first photo looks great and I think I could get used to that, but as you suspected I'm not ready to get rid of the hair I have yet. I am still able to get away with no scalp showing....probably not for much longer though. The Freedom wigs do sound great for when my hair is gone and I will definitely look into them. Your daughter's hair looks incredibly real and I can't believe that part is on a wig. That is very encouraging. Thanks too for your offer of being willing to answer more questions as I have them. I may take you up on that offer as you are very friendly and explain things well.

I just wanted to say that I was where you are now about 2 years ago. Through much obsession over the hair, I have found solutions. I started losing my hair and it went on for about 6 months when I couldn't take picking the hair off me anymore and cutting the vacuum and pulling long blonde hairs off my husbands nice suits and sweaters and wool coat. I finally found a wig that looked like my hair. I got 75% thickness or whatever you call it, and colored it (bravely with help from You Tube cheerleaders) with the same hair color I used on my real hair. I'm on my third wig because I love experimenting with the color. Now I have a wig to garden in/work out in, a wig for work, and a wig for everyday stuff. I had the first wig bonded on my head for a week. Wasn't bad but the wig I got was 100 bucks and it got kinda frizzy. I had to put a lot of products on it. Now that wig is my braided gardening or hair in a bun wig. I still get a lot of use out of it but I love the one I have. If I can help you with any questions, you can always send me a message.
There are solutions. I got the full lace wig custom fit to my head. No one knows. I didn't even tell my mom because I learned my lesson. If you don't want it broadcast, don't tell her. My husband also thinks it looks just like my hair. I get complements a lot. I wish there were more solutions for caucasion women that weren't so expensive. There is a store on every corner for African American wigs. They have been wearing wigs proudly for years and have so many tips. They wear them with confidence as it seems more acceptable like getting your nails done. My African American friends all sit around and talk about their weaves and wigs and extentions and they look classy and beautiful. Why is it so different for white girls? I want this to change. I am now trying to find a better way to do my eyebrows. It's been hard with the fair skin but I am always experimenting. I wear brown natural thickness fake eyelashes and they look really natural. It sounds like I am going through a lot of what you went through. My vacuum cleaner has been absolute full of my hair when I empty it for a while, and more recently I can't believe the hairs left in my tub when I wash it, nor the hairs on everything I wear, or anywhere I sit. I still have enough hair to go without a wig. It's just thinning so fast and the odds are it will all come out, so I want to go ahead, get a wig and get used to wearing it before I absolutely have to.
It does sound like you have found good solutions and I am very happy that you have. Did you feel as overwhelmed and confused as to what kind of first wig to buy as I do? Since there is a very slight chance I won't lose all my hair I don't want to spend a fortune on a wig, but I sure don't want to wear anything that looks "wiggy". Sounds vain but I have long hair and it's always been a big thing to me. So much of my identity is tied up in it that I really don't want to tell anyone I have a wig, and wish I could find one that people would think is my hair. I may become more brave about spilling the beans after I have worn a wig for a while, but it's just such a foreign concept, and seems so unreal to me, right now that I can't tell anyone.
Would you mind telling me what brand of wig you bought first? How on earth does one decide? I live in a small town with only African American wig shops. And, like I said I am not ready to spend a thousand dollars. I agree with you that it is so much easier for our African American friends to find wigs and to see nothing wrong with them. I also don't know what is up with that!!

The first wig I got was a synthetic
wig from a wig shop down the street.
It was so nice ...maybe too nice as I
went from thinning hair, always in a
pony tail, to huge gorgeous model
hair. This, I felt, made it obvious
that it wasn't my hair. The wig was
just over 100 bucks (Ozone) so I did a lot of experimenting with it. I learned every trick there is on You Tube. One of my favorite You Tubers http://youtu.be/Jt3TJOfkHU8 (MyOlittleOsecret) She gave me hope. And, she is adorbs! Anyway, I digress, I thinned the gorgeous Ozone wig out with cutting shears to make it more realistic. Later on, I went to a giant wig supply and found a human hair, front lace wig (Lee Beauty supply) and one of the girls thinned it out more and trimmed it. She is the one that bonded it to my head. Very helpful. She charged 40 bucks for the trim and bonding. She sold me some adhesive release solution and argon oil solution to apply so it didn't dry out. I felt like a million bucks and LOVED it. I still have that wig and that was a year ago. Since then, I've watched so many You tube videos. I hate to say it's my new hobby. I never wanted a hair hobby but I want to look good and feel like a normal person. I am currently wearing an RPG show custom full lace wig. ( with coupon, I got it for under 400 dollars) I secure it with (one) 3 in. piece of tape and I'm good to go. I've had this for 4 months. I take very good care of it and it should last until I want to change my color or hairstyle and then some. At night I sleep with a turbi twist and a little pink hat on top so it looks cute and it's cozy. Anyway, I would love to help you. I wish I knew then what I know now, believe you me. wow! i wish i was in a place where they sell african american wigs. They are a lot cheaper, and so many textures versus straight.
Long time ago, that's less than 20 years ago, AA** women didn't have a choice in hair textures. The hair came from China and Europe - and was targeted to whites or asians. That was it.
The reason why you're seeing more AA wig shops? It's easy.. Many AA women wear their hair in "protective styles" to keep their hair growing, while having lots of colors and textures to chose from without ruining their own hair. These same vendors who would not cater to AA women 20 years ago, have pulled a full 360 - and are now fiercely competing with INDIA for wig/weave sales. Now that India, Japanese, Koreans, Americans, and the Phillipines are in the hair game, targeting the AA market, well, the Chinese had no choice but to join in the ranks. Heck, even the Russians are visiting AA hair forum sites trying to sell their wares.
This is the reason why i wear wigs: To protect what i have, while attempting to keep/grow what i have left on my head.
I learned this by going to african american as well as multicultural hair care forums. I was shocked to see these ladies of all cultures displaying their hair with and without wigs. Some have pics of their natural hair, or blow dried hair, down to their waists, their backs or their knees. They are very encouraging, and have different hair regimens for hair textures ranging from straight, curly, wavy or VERY tight coiled hair known as "4c" texture. This is the hardest texture to grow, keep moisturized and protected. Which is what i have. I'm a black Muskogee Indian/Cajun.
There is one thing each of these ladies (all cultures) have in common. "Keep your hair in protective styles", this includes corn rows, twists, braids, wigs, or weaves. I've also witnessed this "protective style" technique in India, Brazil, Africa, America, Mexico, Arabia, Ecuador, Japan, etc. You'll usually see these women wearing fantastic wigs/weaves, or their hair in a knot at the tops of their heads. Protecting what they have - while wearing whatever texture/color they wish without risking bleaching/perming/damaging what they have naturally. Makes sense to me. :)
What amused me was seeing Korean or Japanese women sporting dread lock styles, afros, twists or curly wigs.. without having to damage their own hair. They look great, by the way.
Unfortunately, there are ladies of all cultures that use wigs/weaves - whatever to hide, not nurture their hair. Some, basically do not know how to take care of their own natural hair. Thus, they just leave it to the beauticians to "slap a weave" on there (which can be damaging if the beautician braids the wefts in too tightly), or wig - without taking care of business underneath.
Thus, ladies, the reason you're seeing this AA phenomenon? Well, it's simple.. Vendors know where the money is. it's no longer in "straight" or european hair, the industry is embracing ALL textures..

It's so interesting the wig history. My friends at work have the most gorgeous hair. I would tell them how gorgeous their hair looks and they'd have no problem telling me it's a wig.
I want to make it more except able for all cultures to feel that comfortable wearing a wig. Heck, I get my nails done. They're acrylic as the AA has left my nails too brittle. I don't have a problem telling anyone my nails are gel. And, they look gorgeous. I found some soft natural eyelashes on Amazon. They look fabulous. Or shall I say, very realistic. I don't want to look too good or people would be suspicious. Ha! I spend 35 minutes getting ready every morning which includes shower and all. It seems like it would be very high maintenance putting all these things on but I've got it down. It takes me less time than before the hair went. AND.. I feel pretty. LOL
My eyebrows are coming along too.
I found a solution you paint over top to keep them from coming off. Waterproof. Amazing. It's 18 degree here right now outside and I wished for that thicker wig tonight. Brrrr. Stay warm all!
