My name is Megan and I have not been on Alopecia World in a few years. I finally logged back in recently and saw many discussion about Xeljanz.  I have been following the trials on this drug. Yes, there are drawbacks but positive things as well.  There were a few posts on here that insinuated that Alopecians are being prescribed this medication by their dermatologists!

Is this true? Can I call up my dermatologist and ask him to prescribe this medication to me?  Or do I have to be apart of a trial study?  What great lengths do I have to go through to get this medication?

Hi,

Xeljanz is still under trial for alopecia but If you are utterly desperate which I could understand, you could technically go to you're Dr and ask if he will prescribe it to you (not recommended) . Insurance will not cover it unless you have RA .

The cost of the medication is $2830 for 1 box of 60 tablets and it may not just be short term either.  I have been on Xeljanz for 5 months now (currently on 3 pills a day 15mg) and only recently has some of my vellus started to go dark. You still might be able to obtain a copay card which would reduce the cost.

Thank you so much for your response!
