I was diagnosed w/ AA at 13. I wore a wig for approximately 1-1/2 years. After that, it was an occasional spot until I turned 23, then it went to AT. I lost all of the hair on my head and my eyebrows began the in and out dance. Finally, by age 33 my eyebrows danced away and the eyelashes followed by 43. It seems to come in 10 year increments. I'm not sure what will happen at 53 (we'll see in 2 years). At first it was hard, the usual stuff - how to tell a guy about my lack of hair (some men seem to be obsessed w/ the hair thing), do I wear my wig all the time (they get hot in Alabama). There were many other things that bothered me, but these were 2 of the biggies. As time went on, and I grew more confident and mature (the verdict is still out on that one), I realized that me worrying about it made others uncomfortable and they weren't sure what to say to me. After I came to the realization that this was me, take me or leave me, then things became much easier. I quit trying to please others by wearing my hair. Now I wear my hair if I want to (usually in the winter when the weather is cooler), I wear makeup or not (depends on the mood). It is true, the older you get the more comfortable with yourself you become (that's w/ all people). I just sometimes wish that at age 13 I could have had the maturity to realize that having hair doesn't matter. "I am me and I like me just the way me is, without hair." I have also realized that now that I accept me, others accept me just the way I am. They now ask questions and some still stare, but mostly they accept me - and those that don't, well I don't care anymore. I'm not here to win friends and influence people, I am here to do the best that I can, help others when possible and to be happy. That's exactly what I am doing.

Hello all! I have had alopecia since I was a toddler. All of my hair fell out at 9. It never returned. Glad to be here and look forward to getting to know all of you!

Hi Steve, that was a great post. A couple of points hit home with me. First, my mother's theory was that I was traumatized by getting locked in a dark room...I guess I always dismissed that one. And avoiding the kids at recess and lunch.. I tended to hang around the teachers as much as possible, but I was always afraid and always tried to hide out. I think I spent a lot of my childhood wishing I was invisible. The kids always tortured me on the bus ride home. That was rough. I don't really think about it too much except in the summer; (I wear a wig). Will post pic as soon as I get back from vacation. So glad I joined this group!

Greetings! Picture to follow when I can get time on the home comp. My AU presented at age 3. If I can believe my Mother's version, it was caused by the shock of having a tooth removed without any anesthesia. I think I actually remember that, too. Anyway, youth was tough cause I was small for my age, but quick on my feet. Though its hard to run away from a playground full of kids for an entire lunch hour. Hair came back in roaming patches when I was six. There was more in the summer than in the fall. Dermatologists could tell me what it was when I was a teenager, but I was in no mood for shots to the scalp!! At 17 I just shave all the fuzz off and I've kept it clean ever since. If I wait about two weeks I can spot sporadic fine hairs here and there, then I shave them off again. I haven't had eyelashes or eyebrows for about 20 years now, those I miss. Now I'm almost 53 years old. I have met three other alopecians in person over my life so far. One guy in Cork, Ireland, one guy in a choir group out of Iowa, and one kid while stationed on Governors Island in NYC. That child was my first time actually counselling someone about how to handle this condition, successfully, too. The kid turned right around and his Dad actually hugged me! This is my first post so I'll conclude with this: I've been AU so long I don't even think about it all that often. In fact, when I see a completely bald pate I tend to stare! Politely though, I remember what that felt like when I was a kid. It's a pleasure to "see" all of you here at this site! I'm looking forward to meeting and sharing with all of you! - Steve

Hi everyone. I have have AU since I was 4 now 32. SO 28 years. So 28 years of coping. It is so great to see so many others that have been living with this as long as myself. I learned acceptance after my terrible teen years, but it has definately left some scars. It is so cool to see so many of your pictures with bald heads. The only ones who have seen my head are my husband and my family. My husband has been looking at all the comments with me and is going to take some pictures for me to post if I can get up the courage to do so.
