Hi and welcome . Alopecia World has made me see my condition in a new way. I am 35 and was born with Alopecia. I am now 35 and 7/4/2010 is my 2nd Independence Day. It will be a year ago that I stopped wearing a wig and hiding myself. I have never felt more free. Thank you everyone

Glad to find the group!

Hi Stacey, welcome! Like you I've had AT for a long time, 26 years. I love your photo's and that you experiment with different looks. I'm not there yet, but pretty close. Where are you getting your wigs, they look great!

Jen! I am in the same position as you... hair loss off and on since I was 3 but going through a bad cycle since december. I also decided to take the plunge and go bald and love it! Wish I had done it years ago like I always wanted, but was never brave enough to do. I just joined this site also looking for new insight from others. Its great to see so many different perspectives and I am glad we are here for each other.

Lori and Jen it is quite inspiring to hear that you have come to acceptance. Hopefully I will soon too.

Hello! My name is Jen and I am a new member. I have had AA on and off since the age of 5, but always very manageable and easily hidden. My hair loss got quite bad after the birth of my second child 3 years ago, but did grow back. It was around that time that I was also diagnosed with hypothyrodism and put on Synthroid. Then last October it started falling out again, but little did I know how bad it would get. Tired of always trying to hide the bald patches under bandanas & hats I finally just shaved my head. So here I am two days into being "Bald & Beautiful". I'm actually really okay with it and feeling quite liberated. I do think it's harder for everyone else though. I'm sure I will have to get used to people looking at me like I'm sick as there are a ton of people out there who have never heard of Alopecia. My 3 year old son is still adjusting to my new look as well. All and all an interesting transition in my life. I am SO glad to have found this website and look forward to making new friends and gaining more information & insight.

peace to all,
jen

Stacy, I have never had a specific test for hormone levels. I have had my thyroid checked when I was younger and found out that since my paternal grandmother died of leukemia-- being a white blood cell abnormality, that my own immune system issues the AA, could have somehow been a recessive gene that just went a different direction in my body, but be the same that caused her problems. I have no other family with AA. I had some issues during all 3 pregnancies where my hormone levels caused my blood work to get all fouled up and had to have several ultrasounds to rule out physical abnormalities in my boys. They are all perfectly healthy and show no signs of auto immune disorder of any kind and especially not AA. I have taken birth control pills between the last 2 pregnancies and changes in hormone that way have never changed the hair loss one way or the other. After almost 26 yrs, I am at peace with my baldness and enjoy getting a new wig a few times a yr and have found a real acceptance of myself that truly has taken almost a lifetime to get to, thank God in Heaven for that!! Blessings to you and your new baby!! I'm still hoping to have a another some day maybe a girl to go with my boys!! LOL Lori

Lori- I am pregnant with my second now and my hair loss is not stopping. You are not the first person to say it is hormones. Have you ever had your levels checked? I did and the two main problems for me were big time vitamin D defiecient and B12. Also my progestero e levels we're really low too. Wondering If that is common for us. I know it is for a couple other women I know with alopecia around here.

Stacy, I have been AA since 1984 and after the birth of my first child lost all my hair again after 7 yrs of 95% regrowth. It all went again in about a yr and I have had 2 more children and have spent the last 8yrs completely hairless again. I am a true believer that the hormone fluxuation after child birth gave the go ahead and mine wnet!! Am happy as I am but always thought the hormone thing to be a contributing factor to the last several yrs loss. Not that the previous 15 plus yrs could be explained anyways,, with this condition, who knows? Lori
