Hi Frank - absolutely you can just stop wearing the wig when you are ready. I did the same thing with a group of new friends yesterday. We are gaining certification in hypnotherapy on the week-ends. I've worn a long red wig to every class until yesterday I chose to go in bald. We can creat lots of reasons not to do this (the shock will be too much for others or we will lose confidence). But you may find the experience (including your acceptance of your bald look and the response from others) so positive and wish you had done it long ago. Walk around for one Saturday without it. Notice how life doesn't change too much. You are just a little more you.
I'm wearing a nice wig in my profile shot but will get a bald pic up soon.
Best wishes!

Hello all. I'm new here to AW. I am 27 years old. I developed alopecia universalis when I was 5 years old. During the onset, I lost my hair very quickly. When I was 7 or 8 years old, I took medication and the hair on my scalp completely grew back. It lasted a short time before falling out again. During that time, I decided to stop taking the medication. I have been bald ever since.

I don't know if I couldl People have told me I should and tease me because I work for Space agency about that bald lady on star trek. I don't think anymore that it is any easier for man either. I is a hard choice. I wish I could help. I wish you well on your decision. Paula

Hello All! Wow... what a great group idea. AA is a unique experience for anyone, but growing up with it definetely gives one a different perspective on life. I lost my hair at 5 and it has never regrown. I am now 42. Almost 4 decades.

I am a financial advisor/stock broker with Merrill Lynch. As thought this job isn't difficult enough (market down 40%+)... I had a very unique business meeting on Friday. A very good friend (Liz) who has referred clients to me in the past told me she had dinner with a couple of clients of mine that she referred to me. The net of it was that Liz was nominated by their group to let me know that my wearing a wig was hurting my ability to grow my business. The reason made sense. The wig gives me the appearance of being a bit fake, not totally honest because after all, the hair is noticeably fake and doesn't allow people to gain all their confidence meeting with them for the first time to discuss their financial affairs. Now, as I said, Liz is a great friend and was speaking from the heart in an effort to help me.

I hope the above story isn't too heavy. Its not like I have not thought of the issue before. I started wearing a wig at 13 years old. I have mental image of myself as a 50 year old guy wearing a blonde wig with a full head of hair. LOL. Makes me laugh.

At any rate. A couple of questions for those that have a few years or decades sharing my experience. Has anyone every transitioned OUT of wearing a wig? Its not like I can just start to trim it down and then one day take it off. I am not sure how to even approach it. I work in a professional office of about 100 people. LOL... I can't just go back on Monday without any hair. Can I?

Anyways.... Its an issue. Has anyone here worna wig for 30 years + and just grown tire of it and decided that it was time to let it go?

How is that for a first post and a discussion topic?

Thanks to all-

Frank
