Has anyone on this site had a mild case of alopecia areata? Mild case meaning that I have only been affected in one area and it is very small. I'm just wondering if anyone has had a positive outcome? I figure that most people on this site have the condition bad but I was just seeing. I haven't had a biopsy but I was told by my dermatologist that the tiny bald spots on the right side of my head are alopecia areata. He did injections 3 weeks ago and then yesterday. He also has me applying a mild foam daily. He says that I really have nothing to be worried about. He said that the majority of people who get this have regrowth within a year and it rarely spreads enough to be considered a "big problem". He told me that I didn't have enough loss to go through a biopsy. My spots are only really noticeable while my hair is wet. I just worry because it is near the hairline on my right side and that could be really hard to cover if it gets worse. I am in nursing school and my hair must be pulled back during clinicals, unless I were to cut it. I just don't know what to think or what to expect. I am trying not to worry but I don't want to loose my hair. My hair is thinner in that area to begin with. Not sure why but it is significantly thinner on the right side than the left and has been like that as far as I can remember. I was told that can be normal as well. I would really like some positive reinforcement to help with my worries =)

Positive reinforcement for you!

First, yeah, I think almost everyone has a "thinner side" and a "thicker side."

Second! Yay! I lost, I think, about 30% of my hair. It grew back. Took about a year. While many people on this site have/had significant cases, your odds of hair coming back are very high. Don't worry about it looking noticeable when wet. Of course it does, wet hair always looks fine anyway.

It sounds like you're getting treatment. That's cool. I had a dermatologist appointment and was only able to get in about eight months after I found my first spot. I went to a general practice doc and he didn't give me anything. The weirdness of AA is that it can just sorta fade on its own.
I have had regrowth.
Mine was always small spots that re-grew.
Then I went to dental school and it all fell out. Spots just spread until all over.
But it is growing back now as well. I have developed three new spots just on my left side, but I know it can grow back so I am trying not to stress.
My left side is always slower to grow back, and I don't know why. It is also thinner.
You might not start to see regrowth for several cycles but mine always grew back. This time it is really slow though.
Just stay on your regime. It's probably school that has you stressed, or maybe you aren't sleeping. Mine started growing back when I got SO stressed I couldn't stress any further and sort of deflated (boards)
But it grows back! :-)
As far as your hairline try a sweep bang, you don't have to have bangs to do it, just part it on the side and sweep it down and bobby pin it over your ear. It's my fave alopecia hairline trick ;-)
Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate it. Did you ever use any type of treatment Artemis or did you let it take it's course? It's easy to cover mine up for now so I'm trying not to stress. My derm did a biopsy today to make sure that it isn't anything else so she can try and figure out exactly what i need for regrowth. I kind of hope it isn't alopecia areata and something else. I'm staying positive though. I have my children who love me and I'm on my way to being a RN. I would like to do it with hair though. LOL
Hi Kristi, Most of my hair and all of my brows fell out and just about all of it has now grown back. Everyone has their own story but I thought you might want to hear mine. I got the impression that this would not happen and still believe that my hair might fall out again but the "worst" has happened and I survived to tell the tale! Stay positive. That's the BEST thing you can do.
I have mild alopecia areata, with a small spot (and some thinning) on the top of my head near the crown. It's grows out, falls out, thickens up, thins out, etc. I have my hair trimmed to a bob, but am thinking that I need to cut it shorter. It's a real nuisance.
forget to add: I haven't been on any treatment yet. Hang in there and stay positive!!!
