My son has alopecia areta that started in September 09. This is our first "bout" with alopecia and so I don't really have much experience.

The alopeica is almost totalis now but after shaving it all off at Christmas time, I am now seeing lots of white hair growing back. there are some black hair too but most of it is white. He saw the derm today and she seemed to think the hair would stay white. I was sure I've read ont he forums that regrowth starts off white and then darkens later. The derm didnt think so but admitted she had only 10 years of experience with this.

So I havent seen many alopecians complaining of white hair but could this be cos they are just so happy to have hair at all! :)

Can anyone tell me about their experience with regrowth and white hair. My son (and everyone else in our family) has dark hair so this is kinda weird.

If your hair did grow in white, how long did it take before it darkened? Was it years? months?

Thanks for all your help!!

Hi Fizza,
I have AA ophiasis (a stripe around the head has very few regrowth chances) When my hair came back after an almost complete hairloss on my head, il first came back white, and then, some weeks later bekame darker, so that I had hairs having both colours for a while. The poor hair in the ophiasis stripe area never changed colour. So once again with our condition, there are different possibilities, even on one head... good luck
Thank you Christa

This really is a journey. I don't mind if he has white hair or even no hair. I'm learning to deal with it. Would just be nice to know for once what to expect.

Best of luck to you!

Fizza
HI Christa,
Don't give up on getting your hair back. I started out with ophiasis and right now that is where my hair regrowth is the strongest. I am working hard at getting my hair back, but not with chemicals this time - getting to the root of what might be the cause of it and taking better care of myself. Feel free to check out my blog www.natural-treatment-for-alopecia.com
I had a bout of AA and when my hair first started coming in it was a very fine white and then, as it when on, it darkened. I'm not really sure about a time line, but I lost my first patch in February '08 so it's been about a year since then. I still have a couple thinish spots, but other than that I've had most of my hair come back with very little "white hairs" left.
itis goning to get black again, the last time that i have a total recover, at first my hair was white and after 3 months it was black again, son don't worry
I have lots of white regrowth white and some very light black but it been a year and they never changed color its so weird
I have had alopecia since June 2009. I have a very large bald patch with 'white' growth. I am just happy to have hair. I am 55 so it doesn't matter if my hair remains grey.
My hair did grow in lighter, and then slowly darkened. I shave it, and I think that helps. It's not that it changes the new growth's texture, but more that it just trims the new hair as it grows in.

Another question...has anyone noticed a patch of hair lightening to blond and then falling out? I know someone who has AU, and hers began by turning platinum blond before falling out.
When the hair grows in white, it means the disease is still present. When the disease goes into remission, the color will come back.
Thanks Shannon
So white hair isn't good then?? What if some hair is dark but others are growing in white?? What does that mean? This is all very confusing.

Thank you
My hair use to grow back to it's full color and thickness but over the years it's stopped growing back as thick and most of the hair that did come back came back white/gray. I have a lot of white in my beard now too.
