I've had AU for about 3 years, no prior signs of alopecia until I hit age 37. Losing all of my hair happened very fast. Anyhow, while falling alseep at night, just when I'm about to get into the good sleep, I start thinking.. Hmmmm wonder how I will wear my hair tomorow, straightened, curled, maybe up.. then I open my eyes and think to myself.. oh ya dummy, you don't have any hair. Or, I fall asleep then wake-up thinking Im not really bald, that maybe it was just a bad dream, although I shortly discover upon touching my head, that I am really bald.

Yes, I also feel like that. Lost mine quickly at 32...dream it's back and am terribly disappointed that there are no eyelashes when I wake up! Do you have numbness/tingling on your cheeks now? esp when going to bed with blankets touching your face? I hate it!
Hi, Sheila,
Yes, I have the same thing, it was especially noticeable in the very beginning of AU. The sides of my cheeks and the jawbones were very sensitive, exactly like you descried - numbness and tingling, even some coldness. As if the skin was off and the raw nerves were exposed. Then I also discovered that this could be one of the little symptoms accompanying thyroid problem. Since I have been on a small dose of thyroid medication, this has gone away (for the most part). Perhaps, you should check your thyroid - but I bet you did already..

i get excited when i feel hair growth on my head when im in bed then when i get up in the mornin it turns out it was in my head.

I lost all my hair just this past April at the age of 47. It started with just bald patches 6 years ago and at one point I had a full head of hair again but that didn't last long. I dream that I have hair and it's funny because I dream I have long straight hair and I don't know what to do with it, how do I style it? I've always had very curly hair so that's what makes me laugh about it. Most of the time I forget that I'm bald, but our Canadian winter reminds me soon enough! I got a beautiful fur hat for Christmas which the postman complimented me one, I replied "one needs fur when they don't have any fur of their own". As far as I can see I only have one oringinal hair left on my body and I'm saving that LOL

I've had dreams in which my hair has returned. When I wake up from those dreams, it takes me a moment to realize that it was just a dream. I reach up and touch my head to realize that I am still bald. I suppose that's telling both of us that in our subconscious we're still in denial. I suppose it's to be expected if you had hair most of your life. Like you, I lost my hair to alopecia universalis when I was in my late thirties (40 actually). We're both still learning to live without hair and struggling to reach an acceptance of being bald. In dreams and near sleep, our subconscious takes over and that's when we think that things are like they used to be.
