Has anyone developed AU suddenly and later in life caused by other health problems?

Hi all,

I developed AU suddenly 3 months ago at the age of 32. My specialist is shocked that I developed it so late in life and that my case is so severe. She is concerned that it may be caused by something other than the disorder yet all my blood tests came back ok.

Has anyone else found that getting the disorder later in life means that it is caused by other health issues ie thyroid, etc?

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks,
Marie

What is WLS?
When I turned 40, I was 250 lbs and had the worst eating habits in the world, but was otherwise healthy as a horse. I changed my diet overnight, ate very well, and started going to the gym every morning. In 8 months I was 216 lbs and in better shape than I was at 25.

That's when my AA started. Within about a year it was AU. I also developed hypothyroidism and vitamin D deficiency at that same time.

I thought it was wierd that it all happened when I decided to get HEALTHIER!
Hi,

I also got alopecia universalis at the age of 32, the doctors said it was either brought on my ulceritive collitis or because I had given birth to a child about 1 1/2 earlier. It is really hard to deal with, I am now 35 and still having difficulty dealing with this condition.

I got AU suddenly in my mid-to-late 40's. I have had asthma for many years. I guess they are both autoimmune diseases. My aunt had AU and she was very sick for many years with colitis. My brother has a touch of alopecia and had very bad asthma as a child. He has pretty bad allergies now. I hate AU but it could always be something worse!
I got AA just after breaking my arm and right before my wedding, I had a patch on the side of my head. It took a year for it to all come out. In the last 14 years it has grown back and come out several times, usually shortly after a major stressful event. The last time was just after my dad had a stroke last fall. He's much better now (even after all the mistakes of the hospital and them almost killing him, but that's another story chock full of stress) but my hair is still all out all over. I'm kind of used to no eyebrows (thinking of getting them tattooed) but I want my eyelashes back! Fake lashes come off too easily and are very uncomfortable so I rarely wear them (eyeliner works well enough).
