Hi, I am new to the internet and not sure if I am doing this properly...or posting something that is not allowed. (Please forgive me if I am.)

I have been severly depressed since I lost all of my hair. I have been getting by with an old style wig - hating every time I put it on. I have become a hermit - only going out when necessary.

I want to invest in a wig that will allow me to return to a semi-normal life. I used to enjoy going to the beach, boating and swimming. I want to like the face looking back at me in the mirror.

How do you find a wig via a website, without seeing or feeling the quality of the human hair or the feel of the cap? I am at a total loss...

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

I entered a link that might be of interest to you. I thought of it when you said you used to enjoy swimming. You can swim in these wigs. They aren't cheap but I don't know what you're willing or able to spend.
I found a wig called Estetica Whisper Lite that has worked well for me so I order it again. It looks good for only 3-4 months and then I order another one because it loses its body when washed. The only problem, and its a big one, is that now it's out of stock quite a bit. Wigs can be very challenging. I've had AU for about 18 years so I know. I don't enjoy the summer because wigs make you hot. As you go along you adjust because you have no choice. I haven't found much encouragement that my hair will ever return. I think I would find it just as challenging now if it did!

Hi Lady Di!
I am sorry you are feeling depressed! I lost all of my hair about three years ago and I am still dealing with the issue. I know its hard but you shouldn't let it limit your life! It's easy to say that but I am trying to do the same. I am trying to have a "I don't care attitude" otherwise it becomes an obsession.

Regarding a wig, I have been to Gilberto's in Miami they have nice wigs. They are very expensive because they are made of human hair and they are really nice. I didn't order from them because of the price and location. I live in Fort Lauderdale and to go there often is not convenient for me. So I found a place in Deerfield Beach called Melinda's Hair Studio where I have gotten a couple of wigs from. She also does real human hair wigs for around $3,000.00 which is still a lot of money. I am trying to find a cheaper alternative since I have a feeling that my hair will never come back and I cannot afford to spend this kind of money every year and a half.

I hope I was helpful! Good luck!

Hilary

Hi

I get my wigs through the internet through a company based in Miami. (wigsalon.com) They do consultations over the phone. They may have some helpful advice including places to see wigs. You can also e-mail photo's of styles you like or what your hair looked like before alopecia. I tend to wear the wigs that can be found under medical wigs and don't use human hair. Everyone is different. You can also ask them about the care of various fibers and if any certain kinds do better in a warmer climate. I tend to spent about $150.00 for a wig which lasts for 3-4 months. I wear scarfs when I work out, exercise or work in the garden.... Sweat and heat will destroy plastic fiber. You can also find out how to use a travel steamer to try to defriz the back of the wig(by the nap of your neck.) I've found this company very sensitive to my needs. If the person you talking with seems uncertain, just ask to talk with someone who has experience with people who have had hair loss. I hope your journey with all this becomes easier. Jan
