I have had AU for nearly 17 years and have had only six colds (and never the flu) or anything like that. I wonder if the immune system being SO busy attacking hair follicles everywhere on your body that its like Arnold Schwarzenegger. I would like to hear whether any other alopecians (esp those with AU) have experienced a similar super-duty immune system?? Even cuts or scrapes heal VERY quickly.

Hi,
I wish we were all like you. I have allergies, asthma and get colds, cut take awhile to heal. I guess we cover the whole spectrum.

Hey Laura,
This is so strange - I just posted a blog similar to this, but totally backwards. I get sick ALL the time. I have asthma, and have allergies to soap and plaster dust. I get at least three colds a year, have had the flu 6 times, have had pneumonia, 2 chest infections, tonsilitis and many various random infections. I had braces for 2 and a half years and every time they got adjusted I'd spend three days being sick. I bruise extraordinarily easily and take ages to heal - though I would put this up to the fact that I'm vegetarian and have iron issues.
I have AT at the moment, though I had AU when I was younger and I got sick heaps then too.
Really very curious about this phenomenon. Has there been any research into this at all???

No research that I'm aware of :/

Sorry to hear that. i think my immune system has turned on my connective tissue, though, to hear my knees grind and feel the pain in my feet and shoulders and hips.

I say im the complete opposite. I am ALWAYS sick

I have had AU since May of 1973, while I don't get many colds and never had the flu, and never gotten a flu shot, I have so many allergies it is not funny. I am allergic to the standard molds, dust, mildew and such, but then I am also allergic to all the pollens for grasses, trees and so much more in addition to dogs, cats and other furry animals. Then I have skin sensitivities to all sorts of things like grass, trees, perfume, deodorants, many soaps, lotions and even jewelry. Then I am also sensitive to anything sprayed in the air like air fresheners, tobacco smoke etc. So as you can imagine I am just not a joy to be around because if you are wearing perfume, it can cause ME to start wheezing, or even the scent from a beautiful candle can take my breath away. I get welts and rashes that sometimes I have no idea why.

I too have often wondered if the same thing that has given me AU is working overtime to keep me healthy from the flu and colds is also keeping me allergic to all these these and causing my asthma.

Well I know that a doctor who gives you allergy shots is an immunologist(though mine knew nothing about alopecia for some odd reason)and the allergy shots i think trigger your immune system to learn not to have an allergic reaction ( I think, i am not sure). My allergies and asthma are bad too, I SO hate hayfever lol,and hayfever always triggers asthma. In cold weather my asthma is worse. In pollen seasons my allergies are worse. So i do have those problems.

You sound a lot like me!

I get sick a lot. I am tired a lot too. interesting topic.

I stay tired all the time too.

Well i have AU for 21years now my symtom as follows eczema, allergies, and bad sinus headache and very tried all the time,,and now my bones ache all the time,,hmm but no i don't get colds ofter thank god..Tina,BBBW.support group

I have had AT since 12 which developed into AU when I was 30, but also you need to see your dr about your aches and pains, I had aches and pains and tiredness and it was found I had Hasimoto disease (underactive thyroid) which is another autoimmune disease. Also when my vitamin D is low I also have these symptoms to.
