I barely use the hairspray either. The only time I do is when I am changing the part direction, sometimes its a little stubborn and it needs a little help....

I forgot during the wash process you can spray a leave in conditioner on before you hang it to dry.

I found the defrizz post very interesting and useful! I was wondering what brand of leave in conditioner do you use? Is it for synthetic wigs or human hair?

Also if someone out there knows where I can get mono-top wig for under a $100 I would LOVE to know about it! Please post if you do :-D

With regards to wigs and care. I find that the least you do to them the better! I get on average 6-8 months out of a wig and when I am nearing the 6 month mark I will get an new one and gradually phase out the old one (or just where it around the house or for work, or up in a loose bun) and wear my new hair out and about (dinners etc.). I find with this cycle of replacing them I always have 2 on the go and it seems to extend the overall life of both.

On average I wash my wig every couple of weeks (naturally if its super warm out, or if I've been somewhere with cigarette smokers or have been working out hard with it on then of course I wash it more often) I think manufacturers suggest washing it every 10 wearings.

To wash, start by combing/brushing the wig if it needs it, be sure to start at the ends and work your way to the crown, bit by bit. I only use a wire brush with plastic tips. Then put a teaspoon of wig shampoo (or regular shampoo sometimes) in the sink and fill it with cool water. Put the wig in the sink and immerse it, swish it around gently by making large circles or figure eights in the sink. Let it sit for a while, I usually take a shower then get back to the wig. I then pick up the wig and let it drip into the sink a bit, then I transfer it to the tub so I can rinse it with the faucet in the tub area (its just easier for me to do it there). Make sure you are using cool water. When I'm done, I lay a towel on the counter, lay the wig on the towel and fold it (like closing a book). I let it sit for a moment then I hang it up in the shower head so that it can drip dry. In the morning it's dry, I give it a shake and go.

Wigs can be worn with out adhesive if they are a good fit, usually the cap is adjustable. For more security you can use clear 2way tape or wig glue. The brand I wear (Raquel Welch) monotops have a clear flexible membrane along the front edge of the wig and that's where I use tape/glue. Sometimes I just wear a wide fabric headband if I want a little extra security.

Synthetic wigs generally are "pre-styled" (a bit of curl, wave, straight etc). Machine made crowns have little option for restyling the part where as the mono-tops that I like can be parted in any direction. Human hair wigs are more versatile (again depending on the cap construction) you can dye them, curl them etc. I find that I tend to go a little too overboard when I have a human hair wig because I'm always fussing with it, using product on it, brushing it etc. etc. Human hair wigs can end up looking tired and worn out just as quickly as a synthetic one depending on the hair that you start with.

Hope the info helps! :-D

Bonjour à tous,

I'm from Montréal. My English writting skills are rusted so I won't be posted much but I'm reading a lot!
Cheers,
Diane
PS: coucou aux autres francophones.

Laura, they sure have a great selection that website and good prices too! I checked "Edge Savvy" that's a pretty cut :-D Does it have a mono-top or machine made top? It looks like it has alot of "hair" and quite volumous, is your head "average size", meaning can you "pull-off" wearing that much hair? I'd love to see a photo of you in that.

As far a prices go, for my budget and expectations for quality (hand tied crown/top, and very natural looking) as well fit for my tiny head I think "affordable" is in the sub $750 range. I've never spent more than $500 and have always had "hair" that evoked many compliments. I think the wigs I've choosen look just as good as any custom made wig out there.

Just to further my own education on the subject - Laura I'm curious, have you ever purchased a "more expensive" wig with the features that I've mentioned? And if so how would you compare it to the Forever brand of wigs that you wear? Thanks!

And for the record, Eric, I think $30-$60 is affordable. But I'm a pretty broke person, so... for what it's worth! :) That's how much forever Young wigs are. My favorites are Edge Savvy and Heavenly Body in Tiramisu. LOL! Hope that helps!

I love Forever Young wigs! I buy all of my wigs on wowwigs.com and right now wowwigs.com has 20% off all wigs until April 13th. You just have to type "save20" into the promotion code when you're checking out. The promotion code box is on the same page where you type in your credit card information, so before you type in your credit card info, scroll down, type in "save20" and then click "apply" and make sure it works. Just thought I'd tell you all that! :)

Yes I will have an online shop.

In the past I have only sold person to person retail from my home. I will continue to offer that service (personal consultations, fittings, wig "tweaking", etc.) from my home/studio. I'll see where it goes from there........
