really? My Dr did not tell me anything about Finasteride only working temporarily! I'm seeing the Dr. next week I'll ask her about that. I've been using it for about 6 months now and it works fine. Well, at least it prevents my hair from falling out as much as it did. It seems I'm getting a small amount of regrowth. but wen I had a flare up a month ago and was in a great deal of pain and my hair was falling out in clumps, I went to the acupuncturist earlier than my next appointment and that reset everything back so I wasn't suffering and losing as much hair again.
I've been on finesteride for about a month. It is the first drug out of 4 I am able to tolerate. I believe the goal is to put the disease in remission (limited shedding, recession, inflammation) for as long as possible. I don't think any doctor can predict what that means for each of us. For some it may work for years, others not at all. What I've learned since being diagnosed in April is that its unpredictable and finding a drug (or drug combination) that works for you is hit and miss. I do think the sooner we start treatment, the better.
Hi there , Thanks for your replies . Well I did not start yet. I will soon. Since , I am losing lot of hair. I checked about side effects I came to know it work very will . Specially , for women's who has Androgenic alopecia.
I also come to know mostly it work temporary . When ever you stop to use you lose hair. But I agree with you For some it may work for years, We have to give a try.
I started a month ago. I have noticed less shedding but I am also on Plaquenil and Rogaine. It could be a combination. I am still seeing some hair loss. What I don't know is how much worse would be if not for the meds?
I have been on finasteride since December, 2014... so 13 months. It is SO hard to say if it is helping, simply because I have no idea what would have happened had I not started it. I also took Plaquenil for 6 months and switched to Celcept for the past 7 months. I was on finasteride the whole time. I have still lost hair - albeit slow... but in many, the disease progression is slow... so very hard to tell. Doctor said measurements after a year were not "that different", but that it was thinner along the hairline. So... to some degree... I feel like I just continue to chase my tail... ;-)
I just came back from a consultation for a hair transplant. The lady suggested Spironolactone. Anyone have any luck with this?
Hi there , I am taking Spiro and it helped me a lot for few months. I am still taking please check here .
http://www.heralopecia.com/interact/forum.php then Put Spiro on search box ...
Lots of helpful information there about Spiro.

Was she hopeful a transplant could work? Thanks.
The consultant couldn't say for sure. I gave her my biopsy results and she'll have the Dr. look at it and let me know. I will let you know when she calls me back. I've read Spironolactone and Metformin have worked after 2 years. But it can affect your vision. I'd rather be bald than blind. What to do....?
ALSO, I have been taking high levels of Biotin, but read that can cause Insulin Resistance and high blood sugars. I'm am Insulin Resistant and have been taking Biotin for a long while. Guess I'll stop that..... I'm thinking of stopping Rogain after 2 years since it's done nothing. It even says it will not help with frontal balding. I just got a hair piece yesterday. I looks good if I don't move my head. :(
I'm so sick this is happening. I've started smoking again because I just can't handle it.
It is such has a hard illness to deal with. I've been on Rogaine for a year and I haven't noticed a difference. In fact, I think my hairline has even receded some but it is hard to tell. Some days I think I wouldn't mind so much if my hairline was even then it would be less noticeable? But the hairloss so jagged and raggedy. It looks like moths attacked it. Sigh.
Thanks for the update. Take care.
I think that is a big reason why I wear bangs... I always have worn bangs - so it isn't a huge change... but I think they help to hide the unevenness at least a bit. Have any of you ever thought about having them cut in? Just thinking out loud... not sure if that's even a possibility.
