I have been prescribed drugs that upset my digestive system , also they are anti biotics and I feel it can’t be good to be permanently on anti biotics . I’m using the cream 3 times a week protopic ointment , the drugs Doxycycline I’ve stopped . All this was prescribed by a dermatologist last November along with viviscal and regaine for women . I spoke to someone recently who had FFA and they suggested I see an immunologist instead of a dermatologist . Any advise ?

Hi Jeanne. My understanding is that most people don't take antibiotics permanently. My dermatologist recommended a three-month course, although I decided to skip them. I've read as much research as I can on this topic, and I believe that results show that Dutasteride, which blocks a certain type of hormone related to hair loss, has shown to be effective in slowing or stopping progression in about 40-60% of cases. One new study showed around 70-75% success rate with Isotretinoin.

All of these studies have small samples and most are retrospective, so there's no guarantee, but I believe this is the best we have to go on at this point. These medications do not agree with everyone for a number of reasons, but personally I've had zero side-effects with Dutasteride, and I think it has helped.

I also use Elidel, which is a topical immunosupressant. It helped with the weird sensations and the redness. I rarely use it anymore though. I've also used Rogaine, but I'm bad about skipping days. I hope this helps. Sorry you're going through this.
