Hi Everyone - I have had FFA for about 6 years now. I am doing research currently on solutions to fixing the problem like transplants or something I recently heard about..."surgical hairline lowering procedure". This Doctor (whose info I have listed way below) does this procedure. I have contacted his office and he does a SKYPE call if you don't live local to either of his offices. He requires a video that demonstrates scalp laxity (I am getting more info on what this is and how to shoot the video to show it) and he wants photos.
Has anyone in this forum done this procedure or even looked into it or considered it? When I first started researching I really was most interested in a transplant but I have Cutaneous Lupus and some doctors are reluctant to consider this because my Lupus could become active again (although it is currently managed well with plaquenil).
FFA has completely changed my life. It has made me less confident and I HATE that I have to think about it every day of my life as I decide whether I can wear my hair down, have to wear a hat, or a hair band. I have been sort of lucky that my hair dresser came up with a hair style that can cover it to some extent BUT..as soon as I go outside and the wind blows...all bets are off. I know, you all know what I am talking about.
I can tell you that Dr. Elise Olsen at DUKE University Dermatology in Durham, NC was doing a study on FFA. I was part of it several years ago. She had about 20 dermatologists from around the country come in and look at all of the participants. I don't know what the outcome was. Finding this website and forum makes me want to follow-up and see what they have done regarding it. They didn't tell us much. Here's a link to info on her: Dr. Elise Olsen
Here's info on the doctor that does transplants and surgical hairline lowering...but again, I would be interested in knowing if any on this site has had experience with surgical hairline lowering...

I have not considered this surgery as my FFA (LPP) is still active- but it is slow moving- so I lost my eyebrow over about 4 yrs and didn't start losing hair really noticeably for several years after. BUT- Dr Epstein did a brow transplant for me in NY August 2013 and I have been REALLY happy with the results. I went from ZERO brows (i didn't like the tattoos I had- felt they weren't realistic at all and I let them fade but continued to draw my brows on). Dr. Epstein was very compassionate but also pragmatic about the possibility that the transplant wouldn't work- or might work- but I might lose the hair again.
I'm currently on Plaquinel- for 10 months or so and am seeing little slowing of hair loss- my hair line is about 1 inch recessed all around and thinning but pretty unnoticeable with hair powder and bangs.
Here is a photo of my new brows with and without pencil filling. Best problem ever is having to trim them twice a week. I got them a little too short this time but the pencil disguise that.
I would love to stay in the loop regarding this conversation as I see my hair thinning more and want hope for options in the future when this burns out.
I would consider this, but I always wonder about cost. I also am still losing hair. Thanks for sending this information to us.
