OK, My son got a Wii for his birtday. The next morning we were all making Wii Me's. (My siblings and all of my neices/nephews, and us adults.) I didn't think the kids were really paying attention except when it was their turn, and didn't think my 20 month old neice got it at all...when we were done, I wondered if I could have made myself bald, instead of the brown bubble flip I had given myself. When I found it and clicked on the bald head, she screamed out, "Sheila!" She totally understood that that bald cartoon was me! I put a red beanie on my Me, and that's me, too! Now, if she sees anyone, including her dad, in a beanie, she calls them Sheila!

When I first told one of my good friends that heaps of my hair had fallen out, so I now needed to shave it off and wear a wig, she said, 'oh my god this is just like Roald Dahl's Witches.... YOU'RE A WITCH!'... Which I thought was pretty funny. I told her my toes had gone all square too. Another friend said to me 'oh yeah, alopecia, I used to have a dog that had that, hey I guess you're kind of like that dog'... These are things I find rather funny, *much* better responses than the head tilt 'ooh you're so brave' comments. I'm not brave, I've just got these weird bald patches, kind of like that old dog you used to have.... :P

Another one I have been meaning to share with you all, there is a gentleman in my church who, no matter how bleek things get for me healthwise, he has always managed to send me a note of encouragement and prayer for me...he always manages to make me laugh, no matter the circumstance...I wanted to share with you his letter:
Dear Kevin (my hubby) & Diana,
Wanted to let you know I was praying for you both today. Don't worry about loosing your hair, Kevin and I have been in that boat for a while. Kevin, look out when she starts the use of steroids, you will be getting body slammed on a regular basis. Or should we call her Berry Bonds Jr? We are praying for y'all. Hang in there.....

As an interpreter in the Senior Adult department at my church (for a deaf lady), I recently shared with the senior adults of my new diagnosis, of Alopecia Areata, otherwise known as AA, not to be confused with AA - Alcoholics Anonomous...they all thought that was funny :)

When my daughter wants to crack someone up, she smooths back her hair to reveal (alot) of her loss and wags her head back and forth like she is being a head banger... LOL she says, look at my mowhawk ah huh ah huh .. lol it always cracks every one up.. The other day at school, (5th grade) she told a boy if he needed a mirror, that he should use spots, he says, hey! you have little hairs sticking up all over it its not smooth anymore!, she says no worries, I have others you can use! lol

The other day at work, one of the ladies was picking a strand of hair off her shirt and questioned whos it could be, since she is blonde and this was brown. Without thinking I piped up "well its definitely not mine" The look I got was priceless. She looked so shocked that I said something like that, that I couldnt help but laugh.

Hi fellow Alopecians! Thanks for the great sense of humor that seems to be a part of this group! I have a story to pass along. Last August down here in sunny Atlanta, GA, I was driving along the expressway on the way home from a friend's house. We live about 25 miles apart, and the expressway I travel frequently has road work going on. Well, needless to say, traffic was backed up as far as the eye could see, and it was at least 90 degrees. I had worn my wig, because we were going to a movie and I didn't want anyone to see me in my "doo rag", but I was getting very hot. Wigs and hot flashes JUST DON'T MIX!!!! Anyway, I was zoning out in my own little world, and just reached up and took my wig off in the middle of the stopped traffic. Then I just laughed, because I thought "I wonder what the person in the car next to me must have thought, if anything??!!"

I was recently diagnosed, and I am trying to keep my spirits up through the humor in this. I found this to be my first reason to laugh at my Alopecia..and I hope this will be cheerful, at least, to you too. A high school friend of mine, upon learning of my Alopecia diagnosis, told me this: "My kids step-mom has this..please do me a favor...if you have to draw on your eyebrows, please put them in the right place..so as to not look like a deer caught in the headlights" ..Now when my eyebrows fall out, you KNOW I will be thinking of her..and hopefully, I will put them 'in the right place'. As I always say, it is much easier to find the humor in things, than to cry about it. I have had my moments of both, but thanks for this site...can't wait to read more of the funnies! My mom says I have a great attitude, and that will help me get through this. I colored my hair dark auburn last night. I told my mom, I had a bad day with my AA, and if I like it, maybe it will cheer me up, and if I don't like it, its okay too..cause its gonna fall out anyways. This is one aspect I have control over for now..I CAN change it. and when its all gone, I can still change it! Keep on laughing. My granny used to tell me, "beauty is, as beauty does!" True beauty comes from within, but I have seen a LOT of beautiful Alopecians!!! Inside & Out!!!
