Hi Ladies,

I am new to the Alopecia World site and I have a couple of questions.  I started shaving my head a couple of months of ago.  I shave twice a week.  How often do you shave?  I like the very clean look and lately I've been feeling like I should shave at least every 2 days.  Also I put oils on my scalp - coconut oil, cocoa butter spray and a mixture of other oils.  I use a shampoo and conditioner that have aloe in them.  Do you have any tips on maintaining your scalp?  Since I've been using the oils my scalp looks healthier and feels better too.  I also put makeup on my scalp sometimes - foundation and powder.  I've loved putting on makeup since I was young and when I used it on my scalp I loved the way it looked.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello Baroness,

Welcome to AW!  I see we are both in Upper Darby Township. I have Alopecia Areata and I shave about twice a week as well, but more during the summer months because I like the smooth look.

I no longer use shampoo or conditioner because I don't have hair, but I clean my scalp daily with the same cocoa bar cleanser I use on my face and I only use oils if I'm not going outdoors. I use my face cream on my scalp because it has sunscreen in it.

I do use a double edge safety razor and Aveeno Sensitive Foaming Wash when I shave and then I apply a hot towel followed by organic Witch Hazel which keeps razor bumps away.

As far as shaving and maintenance it's really a personal choice and whatever works for you.

I had my makeup done a year ago for a summer wedding I attended and they applied it to my scalp, I didn't like it. I sweat from my scalp and it turned into a hot mess (lol), never again. I'm not good at makeup so I don't wear it much, but would love it if you could show me some tips especially for concealing dark circles under the eyes.

By the way, I founded an organization (www.versida.org)  that supports women with Alopecia and we meet in person, well we were before Covid-19 and will again hopefully in August, but have been meeting virtually. We're actually meeting online this evening.  Anyway I hope you'll join us, we bald beauties have to support and inspire one another and those who will walk this path in the future.

I hope to talk to you soon.

All best,

Sabrina

Thank you so much!  I will try witch hazel, I've been using alcohol which burns lol.  Maybe the witch hazel would be a bit better.  I do feel like as the weather is getting warmer I need to shave more often to keep my smooth look.  I bought lighter wigs for the summer but I find that I'm more comfortable without them.  I use Covergirl Tublend It's Lit concealer for under my eyes.  My color is medium-deep.

Your organization is beautiful.  I would love to participate in the virtual meetings and I'm looking forward the in person meetings as well when they begin again.  Could you send me the information for this evening?  I may not be able to attend as I have a previous appointment but I would like to try.  I will send you a private message with my information.

Thank you.

Sounds good. You're welcome!

Thank God witch hazel LOL!!!  I found a new product! Works without the burn of alcohol.

LOL! Glad you were able to pick some up. Sometimes after I shave I'll add a little oil (Almond Rose or Jojoba) with it and massage it in...so refreshing and soothing.

Hi Baroness,

I wash and moisturize my scalp with the same products that I use on my face.  I have and still use coconut oil on my scalp as well.  I am an outdoor girl so I also use sunscreen.  I use  Cerave ultra lightweight moisturizer with 30 spf sunscreen because I find it goes on matte, without a white cast and is not thick and oily feeling.  When I am at a pool, beach or out in the harsh sun I will use a more stand alone sunscreen.

I do not wear makeup on a daily basis but when I do I go farther past my hairline and blend into my scalp.

I tend to shave on Thursday or Friday for the weekend and midweek if I have somewhere to go. I will also shave before an event or more formal outing.  I am ok with patches showing so if I miss the midweek shave if I am not really going any where.  (I work from home). Lately, I have moved from areata to more of a totalis.  So right now I shave  the small patches when I remember ;)

Thank you so much for sharing.
