I'm not at the stage of needing a Freedom Wig yet, but I am heading for it. I have been reading every relevant website for a long time, so I feel like I know quite a bit about these wigs already... even though I haven't gotten to see one in person yet. I have even given enthusiastic descriptions of Freedom Wigs to friends. I still have a few questions though.
I have Lichen Planopilaris, which is a type of scarring alopecia, so I have a constant battle with inflammation. I'm expecting that some of the distressing symptoms (burning and prickling sensations) will lessen considerably when I start shaving my head. In most online discussions about Freedom Wigs, and on the representatives' websites, I am seeing Alopecia Areata mentioned a lot, but not cicatricial alopecia. Is there any reason to think that a Freedom Wig won't be suitable for me? I know that they are made for comfort, but those of us with LPP do have unique needs. From what I have read, I believe that I would be better off with a Freedom Wig than any option that requires adhesives etc... but I do come across scarring alopecia sufferers who believe they have to rule out vacuum wigs because of the nature of their hair loss.
I have read a lot of discussions about choice of colour and density. Most of what I'm reading would really encourage anyone to go for lighter densities, and steer them away from the medium option. I also understand that there can be delays for certain colours. I don't want to go for something that will look "wiggy" or unnatural... but I do want to be able to look in the mirror and see "me" again (doesn't everyone :) ). I am a natural redhead (red/auburn), and had excessively thick, very long hair (often at 30 inches or so). I look like a redhead in every other way as well... I don't think I can even pull off any other colour.
I have been figuring that what I'd be happiest with would be a medium density wig, slight movement, in whatever red or auburn shade I can get that's closest to my natural colour, in 16 inches if available, or 14 inches if not... and without bangs. Does any of this sound unrealistic at all?
I've never seen any mention of this specifically... but I'm presuming that hair colour would have to affect the cost due to supply and demand.
Thanks for any help with all this :) I'm looking forward to learning more about Freedom Wigs.

Hi Gemma,
Sadly, 16 inches of red hair is not even in the realm of the possible. Red is SO scarce that it will be "extinct" by the year 2050 according to some news reports. Even the 14 inch length is a real long shot. If you are willing to color your hair (and this will be true for anyone who wants either red or light blonde in anything longer than the 10 inch length, then you can have your red in 12 or possibly 14 inches. What we would do is order you the reddest color we can find (if you're willing to wait a bit you might get lucky), then, if it is not red enough, you can always take it to your stylist and have her make it even redder. All browns have red at their base so the longer you have it, the redder it will probably get. You can go without a bang, but the pieces look better with some sort of sideswept bang to get away from the V or 'curtain' look of Joan Baez in the 60's. When you order say 12 inches of length, you get a graduated 12 inch length where the shortest layer on your wig will be 12 inches from the top of your head. As the hair is implanted further and further down on the prosthesis, the hair hits at a lower and lower level. Finally, at the nape of your neck if you measure 12 inches down, the hair is quite far down on your back. Anything longer than this in your color is probably not realistic. You can easily wear your hair 'up' or in a ponytail. We can TRY to get you the 14 inches but remember that for every 14 inch wig, we need about 17 inches of length to start and anywhere from 15 to 20 individual ponytails to get enough hair to make just one piece. Women cut their hair below the nape so the hair has to be REALLY long to get 17 inches of ponytail. You can see why it is so hard to get long hair in the colors you want. Someone has to grow it that long and not color it or bleach it. In addition, everyone loses about 100 hairs per day and a new 100 hairs start growing so the amount of 17 inch hair that actually reaches the bottom of the ponytail is MUCH less than what started growing out of the scalp. We don't currently charge extra for the difficult colors, only the length. I would not order medium density as that is our heaviest density. Our designations can be confusing as we start out with Extra Light for children and some men, go up to Light for most teens and women as that is actually the "normal" density. Light Medium is heavier for people who like thicker hair and I almost NEVER order Medium as it is way too thick for most people and with any wig or vacuum, less is more. I don't know much about scaring alopecia personally but since you don't use tape or glue with a vacuum and you can take it off whenever you want I expect it would be much more comfortable than anything else. Where do you live?
Great Gemma - best of luck with your new Freedom!! We used to get some really TRUE reds in the past. Who knows, you might luck out! In any case, the salon can do it!
Hello Gemma, I'm new to the form and I'm not sure if this is relevant or not but I did want to share some information that may be helpful. I'm located in Toronto, Canada and there is a very high end wig/sheital specialist here named Isadore Hoffman (I believe). Her business is named Featherlite Hair Systems. www.flhairsystems.com
I'm early on in the stages of my thinning (more AGA symptoms) and i've found their products to look outstanding. I know on some other forums people have spoken very highly of their products. They also only deal in European Virgin Hair in its natural state and they do have beautiful Red Hair colours. I've attached a photo here from one on their Facebook page. I'm sure you can find others.
Hope this helps!
