About Me:
I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.

Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon

"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..

"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy

I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.

I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."

Hi LeslieAnn, I took your book along for the ride to the NAAF conference and just finished it last night. Fantastic! I was giggling on the plane and kept thinking that I need to share all the practical tips with everyone in my support group. I appreciated your honesty in treatment expectations. Not that I'm trying, but other people need to know what to expect or not. Anyway, thanks again for the pleasurable read. Heidi ...

I'm doing great.....I have a wonderful husband and kids..Jenna age 19, who is the reigning Miss New Brunswick, and Tyler 11 who is an amazing hockey player. I still miss my hair, but know that there are worse things in life. I enjoy the conveniences of not having any hair. That positive attitude goes a long way.
    Talk to you soon

I am excited to read your book! I wanted to ask you if you need a rx. for the lumigan? Where can you buy it? It sounds like I will give it a try. Thank you for sharing the idea.
It feels good to find a place where others can relate to this disease. Thank you for your welcome.

I am actually doing very well, thank you for asking. I love your piece. It's a little warm here these days so I choose "not 2 hair". When I do hair I normally stay in the reds or deep auburns. I was a chestnut brown/auburn at one time in my life and really don't do well as a blond. I have done blond. It has to be a honey blond if I wear it, or a highly frosted auburn. I haven't had time to work on my sight, but will be adding more pics later. Thanks for the visit to my space, "Knitty" (Marie)

I was in Desert Storm from January '91 - May '91 and ,No, I did not wear a wig, too much sand and too hot. I have been know to draw. At one time I wanted to be an architect, but soon realized I draw more for pleasure and don't do well on a schedule when it comes to my art work. I don't draw as much as I once did. My sister is also artistic (much better than I). She also has the starving artist syndrome (draws and paints when she feels like it). I keep saying I'm going to get back into my art and in a way I guess I do - I knit and crochet, cook, sew and play in my garden. I say "I play in my garden" because my imagination runs wild while in my garden - that is where my gnomes, fairies, and leprechauns live. I may write a children's book about my little people some day, they would like that (lol). I guess being of a Irish bloodline I have no choice but to believe in the little people. Later, Marie

Hi LeslieAnn, I actually don't have an AA, I went straight for a Bachelor's in nursing. I got sort of a late start in life so I figured I might as well go for it or go home! I plan on after working a few years of perhaps getting a Master's but that is only a thought for now.
  • Roger

Ohh...it was a poster. I didnt see that. I was sitting long way in the back.

Im glad I attended to the conference. It was a great moment.

    Roger.

i'm sorry that it took me so long to respond. I accepted the fact that i have alopecia once i graduated from high school! at first it was very hard. i didn't want to tell people, when i was dating it was even worse. now i realize that men do not care about that! i tell every guy that is interested in me that i have alopecia. i explain it to them and it's like they want me more. i have even been offered a couple of modeling positions for the lace wigs. NOW THATS SOMETHING I"M TRYING TO SEE IF I CAN HANDLE, LMAO! but i know with prayer and faith i can handle anything. how about u? are u still coping with this?
  • beauty

i didn't take them! i have a myspace account! alot of people look thru them and send me emails on the positions and i also get them from many hair stylist. i was wearing stocking cap weaves since high school. so that was a break thru for one of my stylist

Thank you. I'm still shocked (for lack of a better word) about all of this. Nothing I ever expected to have to deal with.
  • Jackie

Hi Leslieann, I've had alopecia for almost 20 years now. I looked at your photos and love your hair! Tell me where you get them? I've generally just ordered them offline, but think I want something a little more real. I live in Phoenix. Where are you?
    Jackie
  • Alex

  • Ali

    Hi LeslieAnn,
Mighty Tite is an adhesive that I got from the Medical Image wig shop here in Oakville - http://www.medicalimage.ca/.
As I understand it, you must have polyurethane tabs in your wig (plastic areas around the elastic portion of your wig, that sit against your scalp) in order to use the adhesive, but I could be wrong. They sewed some poly tabs into my wig for me.
    Good luck!
    Ali
