I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.
It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).
Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).
On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.
I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.
In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.
Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.
Thank you for the welcome Cheryl !!! I am new so it will take me a while to figure everything out .... I am glad to be a member of this sight ..... I have talked with alot of nice people ....
thank you :) yeerp, the pics are of my really good friends... well i had made a collage in photoshop ages ago and i just set it be the sides background and to tile the image. easy as pie :D x
Hi Cheryl, thank you for your warm welcome. Seems like a great place with a lot of great people, I'll be sure to speak with you all. Thank you once again.
Thanks for the welcome. I am about to go bald and have many questions and concerns. Looking forward to finding answers here:) Do you know a good website to buy hats?
Thanks for the comment on Doofie Cheryl! He is a real 'doofus' so that's what we named him! I have another one too, Stretch, an orange tabby. They crack me up.

I have a question? When did you stop whereing hair pieces, I am so growing tired of finding the right colors pieces, and have had some hideous wigs, and then although mostly everyone that knows me knows i where them but not my condition except for a select few, I am still a little aprehensive, but am tired of them and just want to be free to just be me.
Cheryl,
That is funny. Where did you see it? Anytime that someone asks about it she starts singing the song and then shows off her head and all the stubbles that are coming in.
Hi Cheryl..Thanks for looking in,,Actually,I just back from a much needed beach vacation at Capitola beach house..It was a total blast..My son was here from Texas,so I was just in heaven..Hope your doing great as well, and thanks for checking in..Its always appreciated..Bob : )
Thanks for doing this site - I haven't had much time to use it but still I am grateful it's here. You really are a striking woman without hair. It's weird - I see these other bald women in photos and think they look great! But I still can't imagine not having something cover up my bald head. Right now I wear scarves...do you ever wear wigs or scarves? Christy
Thanx! I found out about this website from a swedish website about alopecia. I just want to learn more about it and maybe talk to someone else that has this disease
thank you for the welcome. this is an amazing site and i hope that by finally being able to talk to people who understand what i'm going thru that i will gain the strength to be able to share this with my family and friends so that i have their support too. its so hard and i have always had low self esteem and then to get hit with this...
Hi Cheryl! Thanks for welcoming me! It is indeed nice to finally be a part of a community that doesn't make me feel bad for something I have no control over. I can't thank you enough for founding this! It's wonderful!
=)
Hi Cheryl! Thanks for welcoming me to your lovely website! You really started something wonderful here! I was looking at the website, reading people's blogs, and getting a feel for the atmosphere here for several weeks already, but today I finally decided to join. Alopecia World has really helped me cope with my hair loss. =)
Hi Cheryl,
Can you please direct me on how I can send or receive a personal email or note from someone else on this site without sharing it with the rest of the group?
Great website again. It's been very therapeutic for me and it's only been less than 1 month.
amanda~
Thanks Cheryl! This is a wonderful community! I love it! Everyone has been just super nice and Ive only been on for a day! I thinks its great to have others you feel comfortable talking with about Alopecia! You know they will always understand!
Thanks again for the Welcoming!
Have a great day

Hello my friend,
Thank you for the message. All is well here other than extremely busy with children and summer activities. Kristin got a new car today, she is very happy and hopefully will be able to go back to work this weekend. Any prayers and positive vibes will be appreciated. Thanx again, love and hugs to you and RJ. You are the best and I'm so glad to be a part of this wonderful community.
Love,
Dotty
Hi Cheryl, how do I add photos on my page? I wanted to dress is up a little! I have photos on my computer but I am not sure how to retrieve them and place them on my page-help! Thank you for giving me a place to share myself 8)
Yeah, I'm moving back home to Nashville, which is 200 miles from Memphis -- or a 2 1/2 hour drive, which is not too terribly far. Certainly it's a lot closer than Atlanta was to Nashville, traffic and all! I'm trying to transfer into the Dispatch department at Comcast in Nashville, but if they try to put me back in the call center I'm leaving the company altogether, because I don't want to do call center work for the rest of my life with that company! I plan to be done moving by October 1, and it's going as smooth as can be expected when moving great distances. Needless to say, my nieces and nephew will be overjoyed to have me close at hand to smother and corrupt. =)
:) as a matter of fact we have. Last summer on myspace but but I had no idea that you had such a great website!!!! This is awesome and kudos to you girl. Its wonderful to talk to you again.
Thanks so much for the welcome, Cheryl. It's immediately obvious what kind of valuable resource this site will be - both for research and feeding the soul!
Thanks so much for your kind words.
I'm fortunate to have a friend who has been through this and have also found a local group who meets fairly regularly.
That along with you will certainly be a huge boost. Have a great night!!
(sorry for posting the same reply to both of you, Cheryl and RJ, don't mean to be generic!!! i'm amazed by your kindness already)
I remember the first time we met in the lobby in Louisville. RJ was so cool =)....he wanted a hug instead of a handshake. I liked that! I liked listen to him at the intamacy session when he talked about you two.
Hey Cheryl!
I'm doing very well, actually. I just recently moved into my own place, and will be starting school on Monday, so it's kind of a busy/new time in my life! It's very exciting though, and I'm loving it. I'm a lot happier with myself because of my advancements of conquering alopecia. =)
How are you doing?
Gack, you compare THAT image with mine? Sweet! I agree though, similar feel to both of them.
Mine is just some digital playing with a picture I took of some bleeding hearts in my friend's garden. Amazing what can come from these things if you let the intuitive stuff flow.
Thank you Cheryl for the warm welcome. I've known you from the NAAF conferences, but you may not remember me. I will try to get a picture up soon! I am part of the AASC group...you may remember me from there! Keep in touch!
