About Me:
I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.

Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon

"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..

"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy

I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.

I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."

LeslieAnn, I got the book in the mail yesterday and read half last night and I'm hoping to finish the other half before the weekend is up...too bad I have to sleep and go to work or else I'd already be finished. I have laughed at many of the stories, related to many more stories and teared up while reading the chapter about kids with AA, (I'm so lucky my AA didn't develope until adulthood) I cannot imagine being a kid and going thru that. Anyway, I'm so glad I got your book and cannot wait to finish it. Hope this finds you well! ~Angie

LeslieAnn, I finished your book sitting at Starbuck's on Saturday morning while enjoying my favorite latte...I really loved it. It was great seeing your art integrated into the book along with the wonderful stories and information. I've got a question unrelated to the book...I ordered a new wig off wigsalon.com and it has what they call a "center skin part", however they didn't mention that this "csp" was snow white...my scalp is not snow white and neither are my features (especially in the summertime) and I put on the wig yesterday as soon as I got home with it and it's almost like the part is a neon sign flashing for all the world to see and know that it's there. Do you have any recommendations on how to put a "tan" on that snow white center skin part? Hope to hear back from you. Blessings~Angie
  • Angie W.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR ADVICE...I DID TRY THE EYESHADOW IDEA, BUT THE CENTER PART IS MADE OF SOME KIND OF MATERIAL THAT APPARENTLY DOESN'T ALLOW THINGS TO STICK TO IT VERY WELL, IT'S ALMOST A SLICK MATERIAL. I DID EMAIL INFO@WIGSALON.COM AND EXPLAINED MY DELIMA, BUT NO ONE HAS RESPONDED YET. AGAIN, THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE.
  • Angie W.

Too bad i didn't tell you about this sooner, you could have told Joe about my problem when you spoke to him...ha! I hate to cause a fuss with anyone but I know that if that's going to bother me then I won't wear the wig. It's the Revlon TressAllure Parisienne http://www.wigsalon.com/wigx.htm?wig=1272 other than the part, I love the wig, the hair looks great for synthetic. If I don't hear back from them by email I will try to call them or something. Thanks!
  • Bob Hershberger

Les..Congrats on being a featured member ! ! ! ..Your a great inspiration...And also good job on your book..I can only imagine how many people have found solice therin..Good for you..God Bless...Bob
  • Angie W.

I just heard back from wigsalon, they suggested using an eyebrow pencil to shade in the part...I will try that and see if that helps. I've had that disappointed feeling many times when getting a new wig especially ones that were ordered instead of purchased at a wig shop. There aren't too many wig shops here so that's why I've ordered so many over the internet or thru catalogs. It's a bummer when you get them and you're expecting something different than what is in the box. Thanks for listening to my problem. You're a gem! ~Angie
  • Elline Surianello

You're very welcome dear!! Thank YOU!
  • Lindsey

Hi, Leslie Ann. Thanks for responding on my comment wall. I wanted to ask about the wig(s) you have on in some of your pictures (at least I think some of those are wigs!) I think they're the prettiest and most natural I've seen. Did they come from the wigsalon.com website? I've just ordered three from a place and they're horrible! They're going straight back. I've never really had a wig I've like, though, in all of these 26 years!! Thanks for any help you can provide.
  • Julia

Thank you so much for your feedback...

I will contact them this week.

I will talk to you soon!

OH...How long from the time you give the book (Manu) to them that your book was then published? Time Line?
  • Julia

Do you wish you had of Self Published? Are you mainly doing your Marketing?

    Sorry for all the questions...lol
  • Julia

Love the Video too...just looked at it

    Hey LeslieAnn!
Thanks so much for the welcome and kind words. Don't really consider myself an artist but love to play with digital imaging and hoping it develops into more than it currently is.
Writing is something I'm excited to get back into as well - will definitely have to check out your book. Looks like a success for sure - congrats!!!
    Hugs,
    jj

Thank you LeslieAnn--I have enjoyed seeing your photos. My daughter has just developed AA. She is out of the country on vacation before her freshman year at college. She returns Monday and has some doctor's appointments next week, her allergist, regular MD and her dermatologist--Monday, Tuesday, Wed, then she's off to college on Thursday. I happen to work with a young lady with AA, and knowing her has been a very positive experience. I'll add some photos to my page soon. My daughter is a great girl, but she's scared right now. She happens to be a beautiful girl--her looks are an important part of who she is, but not the only important thing, of course. Seeing how beautiful you are has been very encouraging for me.
  • Louise

That is a great idea, thank you. I look forward to reading it myself.
    All best wishes,
    Louise

Oh boy, you re so helpful. First of all I have been relaxing my hair for a while then I braided it then I began to notice that I have two patches at the corner hairline of my head. No now I am wearing weaves. I can no longer comb my once long hair in one. I just figured I ll live with it but sometimes it hard.

    Lystra
  • Lystra

  • Laura Duksta

LeslieAnn...I'm not sure if I ever commented back! Congratulations on your book...I LOVE the title! Thank you for sharing your story...it is clearly making a big difference for a lot of people here in the community!

Did you attend the conference this year? I was considering going and getting a table to sell my book (which isn't about Alopecia-but about love and is healing). Obviously I could just attend and sell/share about my book but I thought it would be a good way to contribute to NAAF too. I didn't make it this year-I ended up already having an enagement that weekend...maybe next year.

    Keep Shining!
    Laura
