About Me:
I have been living with alopecia since 1991. Throughout the years, I have had alopecia areata and alopecia totalis. My life is not over, so there is still time for alopecia universalis. ;-) I have had many ups and down and find that I always come out on the other side standing tall.

It has always been a given for me to reach out to others with alopecia. I just did it naturally. I became involved in our local support group in Montreal, participated in the annual conferences of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), and also served as president of the Quebec Alopecia Areata Foundation (QAAF).

Someone once asked me what I planned to do after I moved to the USA. My initial thought was to attend or start a support group in Michigan, but I eventually settled on the wonderful idea of creating Alopecia World with my husband, rj jones, who was my fiancé at the time (2008).

On a personal note, I like to blend femininity and strength. A woman can be strong and physically capable as well as soft and feminine. For a long time, I thought I "had" to be one or the other, and I had a hard time finding my place. Blending both is very gratifying, indeed.

I also like to keep active. It does not have to be extreme. It can be a bike ride, walking, painting a room in the house, or cleaning the garage.

In April 2008, I married rj, a very special man that supports me in my alopecia and is the catalyst and the great mind behind the research and design of this site.

Please feel free to "friend" rj and me: We would love to make your acquaintance.

Welcome to our world AlopeciaWorld.com!

Thank you so much for this site. I have been recently diagnosed with AA and was utterly destroyed. This site has let me see beautiful people with even more self awareness and self confidence than I could have with hair. I'm scared of my journey but ready to embrace the challenge. This website has been the best therapy. Thanks so much and God bless

    Hi Cheryl!!!

How's the wedding planning going??? Mine is stuck in neutral for the moment; we can't decide on a date -- I'm pushing for sooner, he's pushing for later so we have more time to plan, and it's crazy! I miss everyone like crazy, so I'm making an extra effort to get back on here and start posting again!!! Tell RJ I said hello, and I'm creating an iTunes mix just for him!!! If he has an iPod then he can download it!!! Hope to hear from you soon!

    Hey Cheryl,
I am hoping you can help me -- my book just won a national award and is finalist for a second one. I tried to send an announcement to all my "Friends" but it wouldn't allow me to send to that many people. How can I make the fab announcement to everyone?
    Thanks!
  • LeslieAnn Butler

Thanks for your response -- there doesn't seem to be a way to send a message to any thing other than ALL friends -- and because I have more than 100 friends, I can't send. Do you know how to do that?
    Hugs!

Hi Cheryl, yea that's me with Marty on top of Mt. Washington here
in Pittsburgh and on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. Marty
has a big heart, but.......well I'm sure you know Marty....I'll just say we
have had some big disagreements and some really fun times.
  • Laura

Hey Cheryl! How are you? Congratulations on your wedding! You look stunning in your wedding pictures! Will you be moving to Michigan? Hope I get to see you in a few months in TX :)
  • kastababy

I'm doing good -- just been working a lot from both home and my office. Todd is doing good too -- we've decided to put things in neutral for a while; we both have some issues we need to work out before we go ahead with the wedding. It's frustrating but I know things will work out the way they're supposed to. So what is your married name going to be, and where are you two going for your honeymoon?

Glad to see you both are doing better -- have there been any cases of swine flu in Canada? Have you moved to Michigan yet???
  • Jeff W

Cheryl, so nice to hear from you! I'm doing well and thanks for asking. This forum has certainly been a great help in understanding, coping, and accepting. I'm so happy for you and RJ! Congrats again!

  • Susan Fisher

Hi Cheryl... it is you! lol Jennifer may be contacting you for some information also... has friend she's worked with for many years with alopecia and so I sent her a link to this sight. Talk to you soon : )
  • Heather L

    Hey Cheryl,

You are most certainly welcome! I love the big happy smiles on both yours and RJ's face in your pics. Your love for each other radiates through the pictures.

Although I am not new to AA- until this wonderful site you created- I never knew any one with this condition. So the emotional roller coaster was a lonely one. To see how confident and comfortable you are is a very beautiful and inspiring thing!! Thank you for that!

Hope you had a great weekend! And once again- congratulations!
    Heather
  • Jess

Oh my goodness. I can not tell you how exciting it is to find people who are open and accepting of alopecia. I have androgenic alopecia that just kicked in one day. It's been very hard to deal with, very emotional, very depressing, very a lot of things duh you know that. This past weekend I finally buzzed it. My friends and family have been very supportive, though my mom is pushing me to wigs. I'm so glad I found this site, if for nothing else knowing that I'm not alone. Thank you!
  • lynne

hello, thank u for the welcome,

  • kastababy

    Happy Sunday Cheryl!

So how's married life treating you?? How do you like living permanently in the ghost town that's Detroit??? I have to have a sense of humor about it; I have lots of family that lives there and that is where my sister-in-law's family is too.

Hope you and RJ are having a great week!
  • Kayleigh George

    Hi Cheryl,

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to you and RJ. AW has completely changed my life! I met a fellow alopecian from the same town and since then I have never been happier! Thank you so so much for starting up this website. It made a difference in my life and I don't think I can ever thank you enough!!

    Sal xx
  • Kelci

I know I know! haha but it's great to be on here! It's different to see Alopecia from another view you know. Because for so long it's been me and my tight group at the conference and we are all pretty good with our alopecia. I stopped wearing my wig when I was 13 and haven't really looked back. It's nice to be on here and remember what I went through and know that I can help others through it as well.
  • Trina

    Hey Cheryl,

Thanks for dropping by. The wedding is November 27th. The pictures of you and RJ were beautiful. You looked soo nice... Thanks for checking up on me.

I am so excited about my book wining the national ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year, as well as the top honor, Reviewer's Choice, from ReaderViews!!! Anyway, I have a new image for the book cover which incorporates both the award seals. I added it to my photos section. What is the best way to announce it on AW?
