I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.
Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon
"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..
"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy
I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.
I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."
Hello leslieAnn

Thank you so much for your support LeslieAnn. I have to admit I've been in denial for so long that I haven't even been open to reading others struggles or about the support out there. It's been 15 years and I'm just now embracing it. Can't wait to read your book!!
Hi, thanks for the welcome. things are little confusing and trying at the moment as more patches are appearing on my head. Kids at school are noticing and we have just got a school pack for the teacher to try and make it an easier transition. Mum is finding it challenging and some what upsetting, but she is doing her best. Mum is going to get your book. (mum wrote this of course im only5)
I hope you´re doing well.
I read your book and just wanted to thank you for writing it :-). It really is an inspiration for me and gives me strength to handle this difficult situation better. It is good to read that one´s not alone and that many people managed to live their lifes happily even though they have alopecia...
Wow I can't believe you wrote a book! How inspiring, and amazing! I'm finding it sometimes difficult to cope with everything, and I know everyone has their ups and downs.
P.S. what a GREAT book title! I told my girlfriend yesterday that Stephanie keeps DANCING around the house, like usual, in spite of this traumatic event taking place! I will get her your book! :)
hey! thanks for the comment, you look amazing in your photos. are your eyebrows real? Have been looking at 'semi-permanent' tattooed eyebrow treatments online just tonight for the first time. Where is your book for sale?
Thank so much for your note! Yes, I've gone to see a dermotologist, but my loss has just gotten worse since seeing her and she didn't have any answers. Have an appointment with a new one on Monday.
And I just bought your book. If I can find something uplifiting and humorous about what I'm going through, it just might pull me through : )
Thanks again, hope all is well with you, and stay in touch.
Hello LeslieAnn,
Nice to meet you. I'm feeling well today. I started with AA after 12 years working in a very stressful job. I begun with some circles on my head and after this, they were growing up that became AU. Two months ago, I decided to stop working to devote to recover mentally especially, you know, security in myself, self-confidence....
I am very happy doing things that I have always liked and have not had a chance to make them before.
I'll lok foward your book, it looks very intresting.
Thank you very much.
Marga
Hey leslie congrats on your book..Is that your artwork..its amazing?? I think you will be my inspiration on the days when I hate life and cant face the world..thanks for the welcome..cheers :-p
Thanks! I'm actually listening to your radio interview and I'm going to purchase your book. My daughter only has a few spots left and although I suggested she might want to shave the rest off, she's not ready to let go, which I totally understand. We just went to PK Walsh last Wednesday and saw some amazing wigs!
Right now she doesn't feel attractive and is worrying about dating. Her roommate at school has been a peach - very supportive and our family is also supportive. I've tried to get her to sign up with an online support group, but I don't know if she's ready for that yet. So I decided to do it, so I can find out all I can.
Hi Leslie-Ann, thank you for your welcome. I have looked at your profile and all the wonderful comments about your book. I have just ordered it on Amazon and look forward to reading it. I am doing ok I suppose. I got my first 2 wigs last week and have never had so many comments about how good I look which is so funny. A "pain in the a**" mum at my daughters school commented how great my hair looked and then added "its a shame it will look nothing like that tomorrow when you have to do it yourself"...oh yes it will!!!! Like the lady a few posts down I am not ready to shave my hair off despite losing 70% but my little cousin is coming on Saturday to cut what remains more in to my head - kind of dreading it as for the first time in my life I will see my ears - a part of my body I hate and have always hidden from myself and everyone with my hair. About to add a photo to my profile of me with my wig on. And believe it or not I am so lucky to live a 10 minute walk from one of the best "hair" studios in Scotland "A&A Studios". I have walked past it a thousand times in my life and here I am using their services!
Thank you so much for the warm welcome! Your timing was fantastic as I was just having a weepy moment and you brought a smile to my face! One never knows where we will find our little angels to help us through the rough momments of the day :)
I hope you are having a great day and I wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you Leslie Ann, i appreciate it. I will definitely let you know if i ever need help. what's the book called? that's pretty awesome!!! How old were you when you first got alopecia, was it difficult for you?
Hi LeslieAnn I am anxious to read your book. I got AU three years ago and had never had a sign of it before that. It has been hard to cope with losing everything but my eyelashes hurt the most. Do you wear fake eyelashes everyday? I noticed them in your picture. I only wear the eyelashes on special occassions and thick eyeliner the rest of the time.
Thank you so much for your warm welcome. Please forgive me for taking so long to reply. I didn't see it until yesterday. Just saw your book and I am definitely going to read it. Thank you for writing it and for all the help it will provide. Happy New Year Leslie Ann.
Thanks for the welcome, I was very curious about your book so I went out and purchased it. I have been enjoying it very much. I am very new to AW and am very much a computer dummy, so I will require patience until I get the swing of things. Looking forward to meeting all my alopecia friends.
Karen
Hi Lesley, thank you for the compliment.
im great! yourself?
i was just reading above and saw you wrote a book! thats awesome.
i would love to read it one day, looks interesting.
Hi, Leslie. It makes me feel nice that all of us, powerful souls are embracing each other. In regards to your question, no I am not a poet. At least I don't consider myself one, although my friends and professors have complemented on my writing. I write spontaneously, out of inspiration. I also do it in my language, Spanish. Its ironic that I have seen your book before, but I was not part of this site. And now, to my surprise I checked your profile, after you left that comment and realized you are the author of that book I wanted to purchase a while ago. I will definitely read it soon. Thank you for your comment.
Hi Leslie-
Thanks for sending a message--it is truly appreciated. I had just told my husband 2 weeks since I had shaved "all the rest" and gotten my wig. This has happened so fast I feel like I am rushing through processing this on hyper fast speed. On a positive note I have a wonderfully supportive family. HUMOR is my best medicine!! I will be looking for your book! Thank you, Tracy
thanks so much for the welcome :) sorry it took me so long to reply; still getting the hang of the site.
I'm doing fairly well. I'm loving reading up on other peoples alopecia, what they think of it, their experiences, etc. Its really great to have a place to talk with people who totally get what it is we deal with.
I love the title of your book, by the way. It sounds really great. Wondering if I can get it in Australia.... :D
Thank you for the message! I had Alopecia Areata at times during childhood but a year ago diagnosed with Universalis. I was also diagnosed last summer with Chronic Lyme Disease. I have to admit, I am having a very hard time coming to the realization I may never have hair again. I am a police officer, so what do I do? I wore a wig last year and that was fine but when I got sicker, it really got on my nerves so I have been doing the hat thing. Now that Spring and Summer is approaching, we spend the majority of our time at the lake. I just don't feel like a woman anymore and yes, I know it is only hair! I need someone local to dine out with that is in my situation. I also just read about your book and about to order it now. That may be my answer to many prayers. Thank you dear!!!
Hi LeslieAnn,
Thank you for the tip about the person who does your wigs! I'm really having trouble getting the right wig (and, some do cost a fortune!). I am going to email her and she what I can do. I also like the fact that you use the on-line site for your travel and work-out wigs. That's a really good idea. I think once you get a wig that you are happy with, everything else can fall in place. I am going to buy your book just as soon as I can. Right now we are going on a 4 day cruise and I need to save my money for this. I had been very sick last July thru August and virtually had no platelets in my blood. I wasn't able to travel and we had to cancel our vacation last year. By looking at you, women need to realize that they can look beautiful if they take care of their body and buy the right wig. Thanks for being an inspiration to many women and young girls!
Sincerely,
Diane
Thank you! I'm glad that you left a comment -- I will definitely check out your book, as I was just referred to a specialist on Friday -- who won't be able to see me until July :( Hopefully after I read your book, I can get some tips. RIght now, I feel alone -- but hopefully not any longer. :)
Thank you, again, for giving me the name of Brenda Kay. I sent her an emal and will probably give her a call on Monday. I really do need some help! And, I look forward to reading your book.
Hi Leslie Ann. Thank you for the hello. I'm looking forward to reading your book.
My son was diagnosed with AA in November. I am taking him to a second dermatologist tomorrow. I don't feel comfortable having him on topical steroids when he is only 3. His AA has progressed from just one patch on his head to three and thinning at the scalp. I am still trying to accept what is going on with him. I'm glad he is a happy boy and doesn't notice what is going on. Have a great night. Happy Valentines Day.
Hi LeslieAnn..thanks for the welcome. My sister and I are well today. My first time on the website - i think it will be good for us! Your book looks wonderful - i will get it for my sister!
Have a great evening...Kate
