hi my name is sharon, and i just recently before xmas last year was diagnosed with AA, i am normally a happy go lucky girl,i have two grown up sons. and i work at a secondary school. at the momment i just carnt get to grips with this hair loss.x
Yes, they are searching for a cure as we speak. Eight genes have been found to be responsible for alopecia, and there should be effective treatment and cure within a few years.
Thanks for the request. I as well as hundreds of others know what you're going through. Hang in there. It took me around 4months of nonstop crying d/t mourning my hair loss before I came to grips with it. Hang in there and let me know if I can help in anyway.
HI Sharon! Welcome to The International Alopecia Day Group, and to Alopecia World! I'm excited to have another member of the IAD Group from the UK - I'll be posting some ideas soon and I hope we have lots of photos from outside the US this year. All the best, Mary
Hey Sharon.. I've only had AA since July. All my head hair disappeared within 10 days then the rest by end of September. However since January I've had full regrowth with my body hair and half o my lashes and brows are back. I now have heaps of dark patches on my head and wispy white ones too so here's hoping it continues to stay and turn dark all over. BUT as we know it could all fall out tomorrow. It's a tough one eh. Mind you I think I'm more used to the new me now and love my new wig :) Fingers crossed yer white hairs turn dark too. If you're still shedding I would shave the rest off as I think I got more down seeing all the hair falling out everywhere :( But each to their own and only you can decide what you want to do. Sending you big hugs xx
Hi Sharon, I have never had this before and it may be due to medicines. I have also been severely anaemic and lack of iron causes hair loss. However I have been on iron for some time and things are not improving. I am 63 and losing hair from huge patches all around the base and sides of the head. Plus a bald patch on top. I am just about managing to keep it all covered up with my own hair at the moment, though it is very thin. I have two NHS very good quality wigs to use if I need them.
It is possible dieting may have triggered it, but anorexics often have accelerated hair growth, so it seems dieting can go either way. My iron was only 6 and has now gone up to 20. If I get as high as the 50's it will be interesting to see if the hair comes back. I suppose you have had thyroid levels taken, as that is a common reason for alopecia. My hair is still falling out. I am not letting it bother me too much but then I think at my age you tend not to worry so much about your appearance.
Well it wouldn't hurt to take an iron and general vitamin supplement. As alopecia isn't life threatening they will not throw the money into research to nail down the causes on each individual. You could ask your doctor for broad spectrum blood tests and a haematocrit and also have allergy tests done. I know steroids are used but this does not find the source of the problem. Very often the hair falls out again, even if there is initial regrowth.
Hi Sharon, thanks for the add. I am also coming to terms with this more and more each day; at the beginning I was a mess but after three or so years you learn how to deal with it better, although I still have my off days! Now I am learning how to see this as just another challenge life throws at you. Take care
Hi Sharon, yes I ended up shaving all mine off too! I haven't got much to speak of now though, starting to lose my eyebrows, arm and leg hair now. Not that I'm bothered by the latter. I hope your coping with the huge adjustment that aplopecia throws into your life. Take care Becs :)
Hi Sharon- I have been on and off the site, sorry for the tardy reply. You have amazingly beautiful eyes. Those guys in Derbyshire are so lucky! Cheers
hey there Sharon, howz you and what's the progress with your hairloss now? Do you feel better since you went for the shave? I got mine clippered again 2 weeks ago as I was beginning to look like a mad scientist with all the straggly bits *chuckles* It feels so much better now it's the same all over :) So this week it's off to look at my wig stylist's new catalogues for choosing my next wig! kinda exciting... hugs shO :) x
