About Me:
I have had alopecia since 1995. It took a FEW years to get over it, but I was 16 when I lost my hair. It went rather suddenly, from January to March of '95 I went from almost waist-length hair to being completely bare. I luckily didn't lose my eyelashes until about five years ago.
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia universalis
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes - I am 18 or older

Hi, Laura here and a brief history thereof

Here's my story. I developed my first bare patches in mid January many years ago and three months later was completely hairless. Lost eyelashes and all, so I have truly physiological repercussions to my hairloss (danger of getting debris on/in eyeball). Of course sun exposure on the scalp is also something I have always been careful about. But because of the lack of lashes, I have had to request that fans be turned off, and cannot aim the air conditioning vents toward my face--instead I aim them at my neck, where I guess the cold air cool the main arteries.Anyway, as for my progression of alopecia acceptance, it was slow. I had a year and a half to go in high school when I went bald, so wearing wigs back then somehow seemed to be mandatory. Looking back, I don't know why. I think it was just so sudden and too soon. Within one year of graduation, I was going to just hats, and within two I was going au natural :) I still wear hair sometimes, just for fun or when I am going to a major event like a wedding. Just because I don't want to be a distraction...if that make sense. Also, until three years ago I was a regular horseback rider...keeping a hairpiece on at a gallop is really tough! Two-sided Tape loses adhesive properties when exposed to sweat.

I believe (alopecia can...)

Posted on July 9, 2014 at 11:00pm 1 Comment

I believe that Alopecia can kill us on the inside and leave us a physical shell with a defeated spirit. It almost did that to me. We MUST nurture and pamper our emotional selves (well, too much pampering is bad of course, but go easy on yourself for at least three years) during the transition from possessing hair (and, no, I don't mean owning a wig lol) to not anymore - of course, that is, if we don't come up with a no-side-effects cure - which would be totally kick ass. Then, being bald…

An Alopecia Poem by Laura

Posted on July 9, 2014 at 6:00pm 1 Comment

I, myself, have just no time to spare,
To fret, mope, or worry over hair.
But WHY are some compelled to stare? -
It's JUST a scalp! So what, it's bare?

Another spontaneous Laura poem

The year was 1995
I had long hair;
I felt alive.
The hair was lost-
I ceased to thrive.
To accept the loss
First failed but strived.
And in the end
Well, I survived!

Breaking through the fear: my story

Posted on June 30, 2014 at 9:30am 0 Comments

How I "broke through" the fear of going out bald: I just got angry about it, basically. I have freckles, and kept comparing hiding my bare scalp because others didn't like looking at it to hiding my face because others did not like my freckles. It just felt wrong for me to bend to others' will that way, to stifle my own happiness and FREEDOM for others' ...psychological comfort? I decided that they would just have to be uncomfortable - they would also have to get over it. Besides, their…
