About Me:
I have had alopecia since i was 11 years old, and it progressively got worse until i shaved my head when i was 12. i wear a wig from locks of love. i get wigs free from locks of love because i am under 21. i only get one more because they ease the way into college. so soon ill have to pay for them myself. I get the wigs and style them at a hair salon just like normal people do. The wigs usually come pretty thick but they thin out ALOT! I usually dont tell people about alopcia, but people usually notice that my eyebrows are not real and ask questions. I teach swim lessons at a pool and wear a swim cap so i don't get my hair wet and so kids don't get frightened. It doesn't bother me terribly but i would never go out in public without my wig on. that's my story!

Need help with disguising the fact you have alopecia sometimes? Well I think I can help you! Ive been trying to conceal this about myself since I was 12 years old. I can glue eyelashes on perfectly, draw on eyebrows in 30 seconds and have people shocked when they find out that I have alopecia. "I can't even tell you wear a wig" is the best compliment a young artist like me can get. The trick is to practice alot! I put on eyelashes and eyebrows every day, and it only takes 15 minutes once you… Continue

Hi !
I've read that you're an eyelash professional ( glueing them down since you were 12 would make you one I guess lol )

How do you get them to stay in place?
Every time I glue eyelashes on they only stay a few seconds and then fall off!

Yes, some synthetic wigs are horrible! That's why I won't buy anything but Rene of Paris mono top. They're great for when you want to work out, walk in the rain, do anything that makes you dirty (gardening, for example) because they are wash and wear. The Italian hair pieces I have are custom made for me and although aren't vacuum, they fit to my head perfectly. Inside is poly coating that covers the hair to make it stay in. Even though they are secure, they aren't as secure as vacuum pieces. But I don't need a vacuum wig because I don't do things like go on roller coasters or hang upside down or any rough sports. I am pretty moderate -- work out three times a week and run, bike and walk. But I use my synthetics then because of the ease of cleaning and styling.

If you want a really nice wig/hairpiece for the best possible price, I highly recommend Brenda Kay Hair Specialties. She is in Portland, but works with people all over the country. The one I'm wearing in this photo is from her. It's a virgin European hair wig, custom made for me, for about $2,000. Usually pieces like this are at least $3500. She also does pieces for less with other kinds of hair, but since my own was naturally very fine, I wanted the European (and the hair is not processed). You can always talk to her to find out what she can do for you. Her phone number is 503-223-8092, and her web site is www.bkhair.com.
Let me know if you want her contact information.

I also wear sythetic wigs (you can see them in my photos -- it's hard to tell they're not real). My favorite style is Brandi, by Rene of Paris. You can get them at a discount on www.wigsalon.com (about $155). The downside is they don't have a nice red color like the hair you're wearing now. The "dark rust" is way too dark. I wear "Butterscotch."

I hope this helps a little bit --

LeslieAnn
