Hi Louise. I have had alopecia for over 3 decades and have just started going to a support group. I've also started my own motivational/inspirational get-together which is this Monday, April 5. I do a motivational speak then there's attendee question/answer/input and social mingling to exchange treatment plans, wig info, coping skills, e mail address, cell phone nos, etc. Here's the info.
Date: Monday, April 5
Place: Times Square Arts Center/Roy Arias Studios - Room 507
300 W. 43rd St. b/w 8th & 9th Avenues
Time: 6pm-8pm
Fee: $10 per person/$15 for you and your friend/supporter both together
Snacks & refreshments provided - free
Hope you're able to attend!

Louise, have your daughter see an Endocrynologist and a Dermatologist who will do a scalp biopsy. I would also like to suggest her taking prenatal vitamins. Im not sure if they will help prevent hair loss, but they will encourage hair growth so it may make it easier for her to hide the patches with other hair. I have found Drs are quick to say alopecia and then thats it. I found great results for my daughter by finding the right Dermatologist and having several blood tests done by the Endocrynologist. It could simply be a one time occurance, nerves, or a high testosterone (which is what my daughter had). There are many many issues that can involve hair loss. Dont let her give up right away especially since she is just now experiencing the loss. This might be a difficult time in her life to have this happen. And all the words of encouragment are going to seem empty to her. She will come to terms in her own time and will do fine. I promise!

Louise, you might want to get her my book. It's really been helpful to so many women and girls...check it out on my page, and click the link at the bottom to find out more. I am so encouraged by the response I'm getting -- I really want to help as many women as possible and it's happening!
Hugs, LeslieAnn

Thanks to you all for your words of encouragement. My daughter will leave for college next week as a freshman. I am feeling very guilty right now because I did not think to google anything about thinning hair--I noticed it months ago. Now she has lost a patch of hair and must cope with that reality. She's quite scared--I will encourage her to join the college students' group on this site. "Lauren's Mom Louise"
