Information about my hair, etc...

Since I've been getting so many questions about my hair, I figured I would post the info here in a blog for convenience. Please still feel free to contact me with any specific questions!

Sorry, I'm unsure of the current cost.

I wear vacuum pieces and have been for several years now. They are very comfortable and managable, just like real hair. I style the hair on my head just as I always did before my hair loss. I don't ever swim (never did much anyway), but if I did I would probably wear my hair and braids with a bandana and I think it would be fine. This is how I wear my hair whenever I'm around water, to the gym, or at an amusement park riding thrill rides.

If you are located anywhere near Kentucky, I also recommend The Hair Institute:

Hair Institute
1795 Alysheba Way (in the Hamburg Pavilion)
Lexington, KY 40509
859-263-9811
Website

They have a lot of great hair piece options and products and they style my hair whenever I can't make it up to New York...which is often! Eric & Jeletta Johnson and their team are really great and will work with you to try to give you the most natural look possible. I highly recommend contacting them if you are anywhere near Kentucky!!

I also recently got my eyebrows tattooed in the Cincinnati area:

Kathy Jones Skincare
1881 Dixie Hwy
Suite 300
Ft. Wright, KY 41011
859-426-5100
Website

Kathy was very nice, and I am very happy with the result.

How does the back of your vacuum wig look? i desperately miss wearing pony tails, is it possible with vacuum wigs? I currently wear a mono lace top wig and i love it, but getting a new one every 3 months gets old fast, and im worried that one day they will discontinue the style!

The base is a soft plastic material. It hardens when it's cold and softens when it's hot. Before putting it on, I heat it up with a hair dryer and then it pretty much "sticks" to my head and does not move. Sometimes when I get really hot it will get sweaty and that is the only time it is possible to move it around. So when I go to the gym or something like that, I always put my hair in braids and wear a bandana to keep it in place. 90% of the time it is very comfortable and I don't even notice that something is on my head. The other 10% of the time when it gets sweaty it is only mildly noticable...not ever unbearable at all.

When I get a new piece and get it styled, I have the stylist snip the hairline in the back and at around the sides slightly so that I have little "whispies" like natural hair would be. This allows me to pull my hair up in a ponytail! So yes, it is possible to wear a ponytail...you will just need to get it styled in a way that gives you short pieces (for instance, down to your cheekbone area) so that you will be able to pull them down to cover up your unatural hairline.

Thanks for the quick response :) Sounds like the same issue with my regular wig when it gets hot. good to know that it isnt a big issue (we have heavy humidity up here in VA as im sure yall do down in Atlanta..) Im hoping to save up for it in the coming year :)

My vacuum wig is coming in a couple of months. The only thing I am worried about is working out. Even with my lace wig, I hate working out in it ; ( I used to love working out...but this condition has made it so hard.

Hi Ashley. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge! I'm very new to this (3 mos) and trying to gather as much info as i can in a short period of time. I recently attended a Bald Girls Do Lunch event and was the lucky recepient of a 3,000.00 wig. My consult is tomorrow and i'm completely overwhelmed and worried that i may not chose right. I've actually printed one of your pictures as insipration (i hoep you don't mind). Your site has been extremely helpful to me (especially your styling tips) and your attitude is one i hope to adopt at some point during this journey :)

Hey Ashley, I also get my hair from New Hair Technology. I love my vacuuum wig. But I was wondering how long yours usually last. Mine seem to lose hair and shape so fast. Do you bring yours there to get washed and styled? Also, do you sleep and shower with yours?? THANKS

Hi Ashley/
Just had a few questions about your vacuum wigs? I live in Chicago and it get so hot and humid here. How comfortable are they in warm to hot weather? Second how long do they last? How easy are they to style? Thanks

Hi Jessica! I just moved from Chicago about a year ago! I was living there for 3 years, so I know about the weather...try living in Atlanta! haha j/k Anyway, I honestly don't think it's possible to find a piece that is comfortable in the summer. I've tried many, and it's just not possible to wear something on your head in 90 degree weather and your head not sweat. Having said that, I still think these are pretty comfortable...even in hot temperatures. Once it gets hot, you will probably be able to feel it slightly more, but it's just something you get used to, and I hardly notice it now. If I know I'm going to be outside all day in the sun, it's likely I will just throw on a hat so that I won't have to think about it at all.

As far as how long they last...I would say probably about 2-3 years with regular maintenance. And YES they are VERY easy to style!! No one ever knows my hair isn't real and when I tell someone they are usually shocked. It's really nice not to have to worry about anyone noticing.

Hope that helps!

Hi Ashley! I love your hair and your eye brows look amazing. Do you know what the density is on your wigs?

Thank you,
Leslie Z.
