A link between polycystic ovary syndrome and androgentic alopecia?

I just recently went to the doctors where he informed me that there was no medical treatment for androgentic alopecia. You can imagine how upset I was. He had basically just told me there was no hope. The hair that was gone will never come back. He also said that people with androgentic alopecia don't usually lose all there hair. It just thins out tell a point, then stops. Another thing he told me was that there is a link between polycystic ovary syndrome and alopecia. Pcos is caused by hormone and metabolic imbalance. Pcos symptoms are missed periods, hairloss, facial hair, ovarian cysts, infertility, and unexplained weight gain. I was diagnosed with this condition but had no clue that it was related to the hairloss. The doctor said the if could lose weight it might balance my hormones and that this may help. I was just wondering if any one else has been told this?

Hey Chanti... I have PCOS too.... I was diagnosed when I was 19...my whole childhood and teen life I was always involved in sports and NEVER had a weight problem.. But when I was just about to turn 19.. i gained an unexplained 30 pounds in 3 months for no reason.. I went to many doctors and was put on Metaformin to balance out my insulin levels once I was placed on that .. the weight came off quickly (bc of metaformin) and all my hormones balanced out...Everybody is different tho... The only symptom of PCOS I had was that unexplained weight gain and missed periods I had no other symptoms.. then when i was around 22-23ish... i developed "androgentic alopecia".... You can be put on birth control to bring down your androgen levels... which will stop the androgentic alopecia.. I went on birth control.. my hair stopped falling out... when you have PCOS you have irregular hormone levels... and there is much debate that birth control only "masks" the symptoms and ignored the root of the problem... My body could not handle BC because it is super sensitive to most medicine... so I went off it, after a month... Hair started to fall out again (diffused hair loss)... Another option for androgenic alopecia is to be put on "Spiro" this drug also lowers your androgen level...I was placed on Spiro... and my hair stopped falling out and actualy grew back!... All my hormone levels are good I have a healthy BMI and am very active... my androgen levels are good... But after all of that.. for some reason I now have "Alopecia areata" hair loss...joy..lol.. sooo... not sure what to tell you... but if you do have Adrogentic alopecia... there is treatment and options out there... get a second opinion.. and dont stop till you find a doctor that is educated on PCOS... (sometimes they`re hard to find)... Also check out "soulcyster.com"... very good site designed for women dealing with PCOS... try and get referred to an Endocrinologist that specializes in hormone lever... Hope that helps!
