In an effort to be authentically me, I began a process of going natural with my hair about five years ago. This means that I no longer get my relaxed. Initially it was great because my alopecia was in remission (if that's a correct term). Now that my alopecia areata has reared its ugly head again, going natural isn't as carefree. Alot of the hairstyles make me self conscious or don't turn out right because I am missing a significant amount of hair in certain areas. I have dabbled in wigs, but I really love my hair. Are there any other people especially women with alopecia areata that are going natural? How do you deal with trying out styles that don't always pan out right because you may be missing some hair here or there?
Hey how r u? I had full regrowth last yr after 3yrs of none and then it started coming out again after 6months. I have patches under neath and had to wear a headband too but now its coming in again but still have hair missing in bits and cant wear it any other way but tied up and its only a tiny pony and so wished it would decide wat its going to do. I am going to go to my hairdressers and see if they can do anything with it as im crap at styling. hope u find some styles x
I have a hairdresser who I have been using for a while who know how to work with my hair. I also use something called x-fusion to fill in my spots. I also keep my hair short cause it gets thinner and stringier the longer it is.
I used to just pin my hair over my patches with bobby pins or attach clip in hair pieces to help bulk it out. Now I have shaved all of my hair except my fringe and I either clip in extra fringe and wear a hat or I wear a wig. It was always a battle to get all my patches covered but it's amazing the pretty different hair styles you can come up with. It was like a puzzle, if I put a chunk of hair over one patch another patch might become exposed so I would have to fix that too. Annoying if you're in a rush but otherwise kind of fun.
