Hi everyone! I am a new member here. Are here people who tried treatment with NAC and methyl forms of vitamins B?
I have alopecia since 2010 when I was 19. It became universalis in 2012. I never tried immunosuppressant therapy, however I know it could help if I try. But I believe that it could make things worse after treatment cancellation.
I am trying not to inhibit my immunity, but make it work on right way.
I tried different things, and last one was NAC + melatonin + selenium. It worked since last June until November. My hair grew back about 85% on head and I also has some brows and eyelashes.
But when it became cold, it stopped working. I dod not know the reason and I started to Google again :)
I found that NAC does not work without active forms of folic acid and b12. And if you have MTHFR mutation, then you cannot produce active forms. I read before that the reason of illness might be oxidative stress that caused by free radicals. And I did tests on genes of folate cycle and detoxification system. They found mutations in following genes: MTHFR, MTRR, GSTT1, NAT2 (5b*).
That means I have problems with methyl forms if vitamins and detoxification. I started to take active forms if these vitamins and increased the dosage of NAC. Now I am waiting for results.
Is there anybody who did such tests or who is ready to go them? I have an idea that they can be the reason of alopecia...
And I there anyone who tried treatment with NAC? I would listen to others opinions...
Sorry for bad English, I am still learning this language ;)
Hi Tatyana,
Welcome to alopecia world and you are doing a great job with your English! I cannot give you any advice about treatments as I have not done any for over twenty years. I have had my alopecia since I was five years old and I am now 61...sooo....I have lived with it a very long time!
I just wanted to say "Welcome" and stay strong and positive! We are very fortunate to have this support sight and I am guessing you have maybe visited NAAF National Alopecia Areata Foundation? Another great means of support!
Take good care!
Lisa
Chen, I took nac, melatonin and selenium exactly as recommended by that article you are talking about (600 mg nac 3x a day, 15 mg melatonin and 55 mcg selenomethionine) for fisst 3 months. First results were partial restoring of lunules of nails, I did not have them before, my nails had solid red color without white semicircle. So, they started to restore after 2 weeks of taking medicines. First baby hair growth appeared after 1-1,5 months after started taking medicines. Every month there was a period of intensive growth and period of stopping growth and some aggravation of nails lunules state. But it bacame better and better anyway. After 3 months there were some long pause in improving and I started to take nac every day without breaks. I got amazing results then. Almost all hair were restored. After that in November I got total stop of curing and hair stopped growing and nails start getting worse, So I did not have any improvement still November. I tryed to stop taking all the medicines for 2 weeks (as recommended in that article), but it did not work. But I noticed one more thing. In winter I found out that my prolactin level increased, I took cabergoline for 3 months and last week I notice improvment of my nails, so I expect further improvement. But in the same time, it's spring and still do not know what works - cabergoline or spring :) I was taking nac, melatonin and selenium for whole winter, and I am still taking them. In January I started also active forms of B vitamins (B2, B6, and B12) (thorne methyl guard plus, you can find it on iherb.com), because I read that you should take it in order to make NAC work (it uses methyl forms of B12 and B6 in methylation process).
I have tried NAC with the melatonin and selenium without success. But nothing has worked for me yet. I did have the lunas return to my nails after taking sulforaphane but no noticeable change in hair growth. I still take the sulforaphane because I feel better on it.
How long did you try the nac, melatonin and slenomethionine treatment for? Do you have other health and autoimmune issues aside from alopecia areata? Was there improvement in other areas?
There isn't a universal treatment for this medical condition. Ill people or those who feel weak should take vitamins for a few months. There are individuals who choose to buy medicine from ovitaminpro.com because these products are excellent.
