I have been looking at everyone's pictures and I am noticing that no one has a red scalp. I have been diagnosed with AA and my scalp is red and often feels tingly. Also, I haven't lost my hair all at once. It has been thinning for over a year now. The part that is frustrating is that I keep thinking that my hair is growing back b/c I have hair that is about an inch long around my face (it's like baby hair and it's kind of unmanageable), but as time has gone by I am realizing that my hairline is moving farther back. I know I am close to having to shave my head, but I feel like maybe it is trying to come back. I KNOW I am obsessed about my hair hair growth or lack thereof, but I hoping there is hope. Has anyone had similar experiences?

The redness and tingling sensation you mention you feel sounds much like the lupus condition a friend of mine suffered from. Has your doctor ever tested you for this? Another possiblity is just that your "stork bite" covers your entire head (most of us have a pink patch on our skin just at the base of the skull). We're all different in our own way but just make sure it isn't something else.

I have tested negative for Lupus and my "stork bite"is at the base of my head. I wish it was a stork bite - I may feel better about the situation. The redness has been present for a little over a year - about the same time I started to lose my hair. I had a biopsy done (2) separate times. One resulted in AA and the other one was scarring alopecia. I have been to some of the best doctors in Chicago and it seems it's like a guessing game.

A stork bite is a birthmark also known as a port wine stain. I'm not sure how many people have it but it's something many babies have that many people assume goes away. I don't know if it's officially called a stork bite but that's what I call it LOL

Eileen - that is exactly how mine was. It felt like I was wearing a really tight pony tail all day and took it out. Obviously - there was no pony tail. But I did have those strange pains in my head. Also, my head itched like MAD in the beginning! Holy cow did it itch. It was red and inflammed from my itching it.

Redness usually means the area is active and tingling to means that the area is active (or thats what I have been told) Have you tried steroid shots in your scalp? You have to do them every 3- 4 week but it really calms down the inflammation and I have noticed hair re-grow in spots after about 5 treatments doing them in which is good, but if my spots get bigger then the outer areas are pinkish red so its not exactly the most helpful. You sound like me I have a lot of hair and it usually takes about a year to fall out to the point of wigs. I notice that once my spots turn back to my normal pale white is when they are not active anymore and the hair starts to grow back in. I am pretty close to shaving my head too right now,I can't stand the hair falling out every where: but atleast my showers would be 10 mins instead of 45 mins!
