Help - anyone who has experienced this place respond.

It is almost two years since I had the little bit of hair I had left cut, shaved and I began to live my life as an alopecian (I barely had hair). Last week I developed a burning sensation on the back of my head. It looks like I have a sunburn. Initially it looked like a rash, but that went away in two days. It burns like I have a sunburn. I went to my regular doctor thinking perhaps I had shingles. I had chicken pox at 34 years of age. Anyway the doctor said he didn't think I had shingles cause it didn't look like it but as a precaution treated me as if I had shingles. Gave me a topical ointment and medication to take in case it was shingles.

I shaved last night using a high end shaving lotion, Neutrogena Men's sensitive skin - it was excellent. I am careful to always change my blade after few uses to I don't cut my skin. I looked and felt great. This morning the burning sensation and sunburn look to the back of my head (and top part of my right ear) has returned. I am also having this now around my forehead near what used to be my hair line.

Has anyone ever experienced this? This reminds me of what I felt 9 months before most of my hair finally went. I went to my dermatologist who is an Alopecia specialist and he said I had severe seborrheic dermatitis. Back then I still had hair where the burning was which was exactly where it is now, back of my head on the sides near my ear on the right side. He advised that I would probably begin to lose most of my hair although he could not give me a timeline. 9 months later most of my hair was gone. He gave me medication topical, to use to eliminate the burning, etc.

I know I have to go see him, no doubt, but I was wondering if anyone has experienced this. This is AFTER the fact, I no longer have hair. I have very few patches of hair, so I shave. I like my bald head; I'm scared of this burning. Thanks.

Sounds similar to the kind of rashes i get. Also improved after I started shaving my head.Yet they seem to flare up and become red and painful every few weeks or so. just about a week before my period starts. I find aloe vera directly from the plant helps the most. It is a bit slimy and sticky when dry but it feels great and cut down the redness and inflammation instantly. I heard it might even help grow the hair back. Mine actually is filling in a bit as well and perhaps its due to the aloe

Thanks Marie. I have an appointment with my dermatologist. The burning sensation is annoying. As for my hair growing back I wish the spots that still grow would stop. I have reconciled the psychological implications of Alopecia; I like my bald head. Would hate to think my hair might grow back only to lose it again. I'm over it. I accept my baldness acd co-exist with it. Just hope this burning can be stopped.

Thats awesome. I totally admire how youve come to wear your baldness with such confidence. It really looks great on you too. Six months ago i hated my polynesian hair for being so long thick and heavy on me. Then the itch came and the hairs dropped. Ive only been shaved a couple of weeks now and still trying to like it. After all it was my wish to have less hair! But so far...Im just sad.The dermatologist gave me doxycycline 100 mg for the burning. It helped at first but made me tired and nauseated. Then it stopped working for some reason and the burning rash came back anyway. Thats when i turned to natural remedies and discovered the soothing benefit of the aloe

Hey there Lili!

Alopecia is an inflammatory disease; there are days when my head feels as if it's been dipped in acid, and as long as I've had Alopecia it's done that. It tends to happen in areas where I'm actively losing hair; but conversely, it happens sometimes when the hair is starting to grow back. If it's really painful, I would suggest taking an anti-inflammatory like Motrin or Aleve for the worst of it and applying Noxzema topically to take the red out. Please keep me posted and let me know if that works for you.

Katsa-thanks for this information. I saw my dermatologist today who's speciality is alopecia. He confirmed what my primary care doctor suspected - shingles. I'm no doctor, but I don't think its shingles. I don't have those fluid filled pimples (chicken pox) and the swelling/burning/stinging feeling disappeared completely only to return three days later. I am going to think its what you're saying. I guess I've been lucky that after these 2 years without hair (sure did go by fast) that I've never had these symptoms is a good thing. The burning is horrible; feels like my head was on fire. One night I could barely sleep. Thank you everyone for your support and responses. Onward we go..... Lili

Well I saw my primary care physician who suspected Shingles but was not certain as the swollen redness on the back of my head on my right sight also on the top part of my right ear did not exhibit the blister-like bumps that accompany Shingles. He said at this point I was no longer contagious. He gave me oral medication as well as a topical ointment. The ointment made me feel a worse burn so I stopped it. As well, ironically, the swelling and pain disappeared after two days. Then 4 days later when it was one week since my first flare up it came back. This was difficult as I had a gig to play. Once I began singing, my endorphins kick in and I could be on fire, I don't feel it. This was a Saturday. I called my dermatologist who is expert in Alopecia and luckily there was a cancelation and I saw him right away. He concurred that I had Shingles. He prescribed a cortisone ointment that really did the trick. Shingles is nothing to play with. The few days of pain that I felt I thought my head was burning and nothing I did would soothe it. I couldn't sleep because I had to lay down. I spent the night applying a cold wash cloth to the back of my head on and off. It also made me feel run down. I am grateful for the information provided me here. Katsababy's info is paramount. I notice sometimes I have irritation after shaving even though I have switched to a sensitive skin shaving lotion. I am now going to research an after shaving lotion. I have a friend who shaves his head and gets irritation. He had recommended a lotion bu Aveeno I'll check out. Thanks everyone for your feedback and help.

Perhaps look at dermalogica's products as well. They have a shaving set that is for sensitive skin. Expensive but perhaps worth it if it helps. My son has started using it ( on his face) and he has extreme exzema and skin sensitivities and said it was very soothing. Shingles I hear is extremely painful. Terrible luck to get in on your head :-(. Imagine if you DID have hair and got it. Take it easy for a bit as it is a sign your body is run down.
