Because I Have Alopecia, Something Wonderful Happened

After all the anger and tears and depression that I've come through to be where I am, something amazing and positive happened as a direct result of my losing all my hair!

I have a friend who is battling cancer, and she's having a very tough time physically and emotionally. She's undergoing chemo, and recently lost her beautiful hair. I had given her several of my Turkish scarves, but today when I called her, she started crying and asked me if I have a wig she could borrow. She's lost a lot of weight, and she just wants to be able to go out and not look "sick".

As many of you know from my National Bald Out and other videos, I have chosen to go bald in public, when I'm not wearing a scarf. I own two very nice synthetic short wigs that have had very little use. I haven't worn them in about 6 months, and they just sit sadly on their styrofoam heads in my closet. I hadn't thought of loaning them to my friend because they're a very different style and texture from hers.

I took them to my friend today, and she had such joy on her face when she saw herself in the mirror wearing one! She can't afford to buy a wig, and she doesn't have the energy to shop for one even if she had the money to spare. I was able to give her a tutorial on how to shave her stubble to be more comfortable, how to wear the cotton wig cap underneath, how to adjust and position the wigs, how to care for them. A year and a half ago, I knew none of this.

I feel so good, and my dear friend's spirits are lifted and she can't wait to go out wearing my wigs.

If you're like me and have wigs that you're not wearing, think about ways to donate them...maybe some of you have suggestions to post here. Perhaps cancer societies in your town, maybe even Craig's list. Maybe alopecia support groups where you live.

That is a great story. I love that you were able to help your friend. I know that is a very good feeling to know that you have helped someone out. I love that feeling! Although I don't own any wigs, you have a great idea about donating unused wigs. I have a friend who was diagnosed with Alopecia Universalis when she was 12. She is now 29 and can't afford to buy a nice looking wig. She does not go out without the only one wig that she owns, but sadly it is old and she uses it everyday, day in and day out. I wish there was a way that someone could donate one to her. I have been friends with her since she was 12... I met her right after all her hair fell out. She has struggled with getting wigs all her life. Some times someone will buy one for her but she is forced to wear the same one all the time until it falls apart. Maybe you might have an idea of where I can check into getting a wig donated to her?
I pray that your friend pulls thru this cancer and gets well again. I wish you all the best of luck and may God bless yours and your friends life.

Tonight I played at a big Greek Festival with my band, and my friend who has cancer came out dancing for the first time since she began chemo. She was wearing my wig and looked great. She told me over and over how she wouldn't have come and enjoyed the music and dancing if she hadn't had the wig. After she'd thanked me for the 5th or 6th time, I told her how good it made ME feel to have something positive come from my hair loss. (By the way, we rocked!)

Thanks, Chris. I posted some photos from an evening of dancing in August where I was drumming, and my friend who I gave the wig to is in a couple of the photos. Here's one - she's behind me in the blue shirt:

It's really made a huge difference for her, and it makes me feel very happy, indeed.

All the best,
Mary
