Being a bald goddess at Comic-Con

A friend offered me a 4-day ticket to Comic-Con this year, so I decided to make a costume I've thought about doing ever since I lost my hair in 2008 - the bald and sexy "Ilia" from the 1979 Star Trek movie. She spent most of the movie in a skimpy costume and is the only bald leading lady I think Hollywood has ever featured. For those who haven't seen the movie, here's a nifty 10-minute version of the whole movie SPOILER ALERT...this gives it all away:

I wore my Ilia costume for 2 full days at Comic-Con (120,000+ people in attendance), and it was an amazing experience! NO ONE asked me about my "cancer". Many people told me how beautiful I looked, and I was asked to pose for photos constantly. I felt like a total rock star. Here I am in the San Diego Union-Tribune online gallery (I'm #8): http://www.utsandiego.com/photos/galleries/2013/jul/20/faces-comic-...

I was the only Ilia at Comic-Con, and the only bald woman except for an actress (Karen Gillan)who made the news for shaving her head for a role. I felt fabulous and hated for it to end. If I go next year, I'm wearing the same costume again.

Every bald woman should feel as free and comfortable and special as I did for those 2 days! Though I've been going out in public bald 24/7 for 5 years, when I have those moments of feeling less-than-beautiful, I'm going to remember how I felt as Ilia!

Thank you! Even better for your daughter would be the annual NAAF Conference! I went for the first time this year, and there were SO many happy, beautiful, bald kids having fun and feeling "normal".

Hi Mary,
I loved your post!!! I went to a Sci-Fi convention with my bald head as my costume and it was wonderful I won't go out in public without a wig so being there I could be my self and have fun:)Did you make your costume? I had thought about going as Llia myself but did not have time to get it together before I went. Thanks for sharing your story!!! And you looked beautiful.

Thanks! I made the costume...took me a couple weeks of planning, and one week of intensive sewing (made two test versions). Very fun.
