A question for those of you that have taken the shots to treat the AA.  My personal physician diagnosed my alopecia areta and said one of the possible treatments is shot in the bald patches.  I took the shots in the (at that time) area with no hair.  That was one of the most painful and unpleasant experiences I have ever had.  My question is, when you took the shots was it extremely painful or was that because a primary care physician did the work and not a dermatologist?

Seems the cortizone helped, my hair is growing back.  It's almost all white but it is coming in slowly.  Feels real good to be making progrress but I have to admit that I remain in fear of losing it again.  I guess I'l just have to wait and see.

Hi George, for now, my hair is growing back.  I am hopeful that it will stay with me this time.  I still have some spots that have sparse growth but there is progress.  I think my alopecia  was caused by a combination of surgical trauma and stress.  My bodily systems are returning to normal and I've managed to lower my stress levels.  Hope this problem is a one time occurrence.  Good luck with your treatment.

Hello Dark. I'm doing the same shots right now too. I had experience with shots 6 years ago and it's helped me but for 5-6 months. Then it's comes back. In my country (i'm from Belarus, right now i'm living in San Fran) i didn't find any doctors who can do a cartisol shots. I found much better alternative there. I had azon therapy and it's helps me, but only on the head. Unfortunately eyebrows didn't come back. 2,5 years ago i came here. I tried to find out information about azon therapy- no result and i decided to try one more time cortizone shots..Will see how it's help. In my understanding all problem inside-cartizone, azon and etc its temporary.

I've been to a dermatologist twice now.  She gave me several shots the first time and they weren't nearly as painful as what my PC's were.  I went back yesterday and she gave me about 10 more.  This time they hurt a little more but again not nearly as much at the one's from my PC.  The good thing is that my hair is starting to grow back.  It's mostly white but I can live with that.  It's still very fine but the bald spots have hair.  Hope it lasts.

My Dr. (in NYC) was one of the first to do mini-injections.  He had a very tiny needle and injected like 20 or 30 times in an area.  I felt it very little, it almost felt good (weird, I know) -- but I felt like it would get my hair back so it was good.

Another Dr. I went to (also a dermatologist) didn't have the technique and gave me a couple of kind of painful injections, I remember.  I thought they all did it the same way -- but I guess you should probably ask before you get there.

In the most recent times (maybe 4 years ago I had my last shot), it seems every dermatologist does it the mini-injection way, but I would make sure anyway since you had a bad experience.

My dermatologist did a great job.  There was minimal pain and I have no problem doing it again.  I really like my primary care dr but I won't let him do it again.

My dermatologist actually brought my primary physician into one of our appointments to show him how to do the injections.  He also gave him very detailed instructions.  It is good if you can get them to work together.  I find it painful no matter who does it, but my dermatologist has a lot more experience so I do prefer when he does it.

My family doctor did one shot for a 1 in circle.  My hair is growing back in that spot but I won't go to him for another one.  I have an appointment with a dermatologist on the 22nd of April but I'm only seeing a physician's assistant.  We'll see how that works out.  It might be a while before I can actually see a the doctor.

My family doctor also did my injections, he did one full needle in the front of my palm sized bald patch and one full needle in the back.  It did hurt really bad and I read that the shots are to be given 1cm apart all over the patch.  I don't think he did it right but takes so long to get into a specialist here in Canada, I would be waiting for months.
