A question for those of you that have taken the shots to treat the AA.  My personal physician diagnosed my alopecia areta and said one of the possible treatments is shot in the bald patches.  I took the shots in the (at that time) area with no hair.  That was one of the most painful and unpleasant experiences I have ever had.  My question is, when you took the shots was it extremely painful or was that because a primary care physician did the work and not a dermatologist?

Wow, that's a little scary.

I had my shots done by a dermatologist.  At firs they didn't hurt but the more I got them they started to hurt.  They did not help with my hair loss.  Several years later when I saw my eye doctor for cataracts he told me he noticed a slight distortion with my cornea.  He asked me if I had cortisone shots to the head.  He said he believes that is what caused it.

I have an appointment with a dermatologist later this month but it may turn out to be a one time good deal.  We will have the discussion before any treatment begins.  In this case, No Pain No Gain is NOT my motto.

ALLLLLL my shots from ALLLLLLL my DERMATOLOGISTS hurt. I finally admitted this to myself and gave up on shots, while remaining AT and resigned to wigs/hats/scarves for the duration.

I had cortizone shots as a child on my eyebrows, eyelashes and small bald spots on head. Given by my New York dermatologist with very very small needles -- I didn't even feel a thing! Dermatologists have very specialized, small needles. Well my hair grew back great - eyebrows, eyelashes, patches on head all grew back. But maybe 4-6 months later, the hair all fell out again! Alopecia runs in cycles. No cure.

Thanks Em.  I really like my primary care physician but I suspected the pain wasn't necessary.  I would go bald before I will allow him to do any more injections.  I will follow up with a dermatologist because I have seen fairly good results from the first treatment.
