Hi Lynn

I'm going to ask about counseling when I see the doctor in a couple of weeks time. I go to see a homeopath once a month and it's really helpful to talk about it and let your feelings out, but I still feel the need to take it further as there are times that I feel unable to cope with this. I also had a few sessions with a hypnotherapist and that was helpful too. I'll let you know how I get on.

In the meantime, take care of yourself. As I said before, you've coped so well with this so far so don't beat yourself up when it gets you down. I keep telling myself that it's part of the healing process. You will beat this!!!

From my research I have noticed that many cannot depend on counselling because they simply don't know how do help someone with this problem. I suppose to a certain degree they may be able to help with improvind self-esteem but other than that they just don't get it so it's hard to help what you don't understand. There are lots of people on this website though that can help you through whatever it is that's bothering you. It's worth a shot but don't fully expect it to help you overcome your alopecia. I'm here if anyone needs to talk along with many more who have dealt with alopecia for many years. Good luck.

Counseling could be helpful to some extent. They would be able to help with coping mechanisms when you get anxious or upset and teach you ways to relax when something happens that triggers intrusive thoughts. Losing hair is traumatic and to that degree they could probably help but the best bet is finding a support group where you actually meet and see others with the same problem. Of course talking to people here is very helpful too but going to a support group that actually meets on a regular basis where you could establish some relationships could really add some healing to the situation. There's also the possibility that the hair loss has kicked in a chemical depression and talking to your dr. about medication may be worth checking into. I hope you feel better and are comforted knowing this group is here for you and for me...AW is a blessing!

Lynne,
You'll always have a world of support right here, but if you think it might be helpful to sit down with someone and talk things out, why not give a counsellor a try? The right person could help you gain a new perspective on this and get a grip on some of the psychological side effects of this (fear, anxiety, sadness) which as Joy pointed out may cause chemical imbalances as well. Some feel there is a stigma attached to seeking professional counselling, but there is absolutely no reason to feel that way. Like any other doctor, a therapist may just be able to help you feel better. Hang in there and be well!

We are all here for support, anything you need, just reach out and you would be amazed at how helpful this site really is. Not to say that counseling won't help but I have found far more help on here than I have ever found from a counselor. Good luck to you, whichever route you decide to take but know that we are all here for you.

FYI, you are beautiful, hair or not.

Hi lynn
I think you should do whatever you need to feel heal from your loss. Be it counseling, hypnotherapy (expensive but very helpful for me) or just reaching out for community. Do what feels right! It hate it when I am going about my business, having a normal day, then a wave of sadness wells up from nowhere and knocks me for a loop. The ups and downs are very hard. Hang in there. Glad you are here! ;)
