I couldn't sleep well last night so got out my sketch book, set up my mirror, and started drawing a portrait of myself bald. At 59 let me say that with a bald head all I could see was wrinkles and sagging muscles without the benefit of hair to cover over these defects. It has given me all the proof I need NOT to bare my head in public! Am I too sensitive/vain? I don't know, but I can say that although I'm okay with being bald when I know I can wear a wig to cover up, I am pretty sure I'm not okay with being bald in public not so much for my bald head but for my face and neck!

Hi Pat,

I'll be 56 in a few months. I have definitely thought about what it's going to be like going out bald when I'm older. I have no role models to look to on this - I've never even seen a photo of an older alopecian woman bald. Maybe I'll change my mind as I age and decide to wear a wig (or maybe someone will make a wig I can tolerate!) Or, maybe I'll just wear a scarf all the time.

But, I think about this: these days men have the socially-acceptable choice to be seen bald, and to shave their heads if they're losing their hair. All I want is for women to have the same choice - to be uncovered or covered. Just as older men are bald and let their wrinkles and sags show, maybe as we age, more women will do the same and it won't be such a big deal.

The bottom line is to be comfortable with how you look and to feel good about yourself.

I don't think your vain either. Its not vanity, sounds like self inventory. Like it or not we are an imaged
based society and we all try to some extent to be happy with our image that we present. I like every
wrinkle I have, I worked very hard for them. :)
I think you look very good....your husband should be proud.

Thanks everyone for your comments, much appreciated. I'll stick to my wigs though :)

Hi, Pat! Though you look like you already got such good advice I just wanted to say that I agree with the others in that is important that you choose what makes you feel comfortable. I may wear sweatpants to the store one day and on another, feel like I want to wear a comfy sundress or something... but no one should judge you for that or call you vain if you decide, for example, to wear some cute sandals over a pair of sneakers, you know? :o)

Thanks, yes I know exactly what you mean...I like feeling 'myself' when I wear hair...I like the wind blowing through my hair and the feel of it around my face. I sometimes go bald around the home but that's as far as it gets, the rest of the time I'm wearing either a wig or a bandana....it feels more comfortable, more 'me'.

Pat...what type of wig do you wear? Are they comfortable?

For me, when I put on a wig now, I feel really "fake" and not like "me" at all.

Physical comfort trumps everything else - for me. For other women, it doesn't. Whatever works for the individual is what they should do...it's all about having a choice.
