So today was the first day back to work with my new nekkid head. I prepared a lot of ppl, but still I was greeted with "Whoa! Why? The summer 'do ?" A few ppl I just nodded at and said it was for the summer. A few others I kinda filled in some details.
The Surprising thing was, when I mentioned Alopecia, a few people nodded and said they knew or know someone (else) with AA. Either someone they know had a small patch lost and then it returned or a relative has it.
I actually got a lot of support. Well.. it makes you wonder if ppl are just being nice. What do you tell someone with something "glaring" about themselves? "Hey, you know, your head is really shiney, can you cover up?" Well, that was along the lines of what I was expecting. I didn't get anything but compliments. A few told me they just weren't used to seeing me this way (Sans hair).
All in all, the only teasing I got was from some grocery guys that pretty much already shave their heads anyway (it's hot throwing freight/food). It's a guy thing anyway. ¬.¬
So my thoughts of getting teased, kidded, razzed, all that... was wasted energy. And here I was mentally thinking the worst.
I think it is human nature to expect the worst from the unknown.
People were only shocked because I never cut my hair really short. Sure, they noticed my "solar panel" that was the only visible spot of AA but they pretty much thought it was... yep, you guessed it... "Male Pattern Baldness."
I had a dentist appt today also. When I went and checked in, one of the assistants looked at me and was in semi-shock. She kinda stammered, "Jay, you cut your hair!" I just replied, "Do you like it?" She was trying to take her foot out of her mouth and said yes and complimented me.
I had to change chairs at the dentist (one for reg. dentist and other for orthodontist). While waiting, the young woman that I normally see came up front and started calling my name and looking around like she didn't see me. I said hello a couple of times and she stopped and looked at my face before you could see the light go on.
I told her the story and again, she too knew someone that had a small bout of AA.
So that was my first day @ work. This morning, as I walked out the door, I had serious butterflies. All unfounded, of course ¬.¬
