Just got home from a little shopping. I visited a small local store that specialized in cancer-related items, including wigs. They only had maybe 3 wigs in the store and only two catalogues of styles. This store only deals in synthetic wigs. She said that she doesn't carry human hair wigs because they don't last as long, require more maintenance and that the hairs tend to fall out, so they often need to go back in for hair to be added, which costs more money. Is what she said true?

Needless to say, the wigs she sells are very reasonably priced. She offered to order in a wig for me at not cost. I can try it on when it comes in and I still have the choice of purchasing it or not. So, I ordered one!! I thought the price is "right" for a trial... see if I truly do like the wig-wearing lifestyle. But I worry that if it's not a high-quality wig and perhaps not the perfect fit that I might turn myself off of the true wig experience. I worry that I may waste my money on a "cheaper" version.

I still have much research to do. I have yet to see, touch and feel other kinds of wigs and to read more about others' experiences and recommendations.

I will endeavour to read all posts here on wigs!! If anyone would care to share their experiences and/or recommendations about the "kind" of wig to consider or avoid, please help!

:)

I can't tell you about human hair wigs as I am still doing my own research, I can, however tell you about my experiences with Synthetic hair wigs, I myself bought a "cheaper" version, managed to get a great deal (or at least, I beleive it is a great deal) and bought one for $50. I LOVED it, wore it all the time, very comfortable, a little warm and by the end of the day I was happy to have it off, but felt basically like wearing a hat all day, didn't bother me at all. I felt very confident with myself, constantly got compliments and all sorts of things. Anyways, Unfortunately, a few things that I was NOT told about synthetic wigs was HOW sensitive they are to heat. I was told don't blow dry them or use a curling iron but I was not told that the heat from the back of my neck alone (not even in the summer I might add) could make it frizz and feel like straw. It still looks presentable but I need to be a lot more cautious on where I wear it and such as I don't want it to get ruined. I work in a restaurant and often am in the kitchen, and in the kitchen in the middle of summer a synthetic wig is not an option for me so I am checking out alternatives. In the meantime, I have done a fund raiser through work and arranged it as part of the target to shave my head so now, I get to go bald and everyone else thinks it is JUST for the cause, I love that it helped raise money but I also love that I can be bald without any explanation needed.

I heard of that fundraiser (Cops for Cancer?) and I would like to do that too! I think I will check that out...

Mine was a separate fund raiser arranged in my restaurant, We raised money for a women's emergency shelter, put up a poster saying if we reached our goal I would shave my head, we not only met it but we surpassed it by HUGE amounts. Goal was $5000 and we hit $6400.

Wow! Congratulations on the fundraiser! And I forgot to say thank you for sharing your experience with synthetic wigs. If I decide to purchase the wig, I will keep your advice about the heat in mind.
I made a consultation appointment for Friday to find out more about the human hair wigs and to hopefully try some on! I'm really excited!!! I am also getting pumped about shaving my head.

Do wigs stay on better on a shaved head, or even REALLY short hair (like a buzz) or does it matter?

To be honest I can't tell you for sure if it works better or not because I haven't worn my wig since I shaved it. I will be sure to let you know when I try but my plan is to only wear it if I am going for a fancy outing or something, I feel very comfortable with my bald head, more at peace with who I am so to speak so I haven't bothered with wearing my wig since then. Glad to hear you have a consultation. Let us all know how it goes, can't wait to see pics of the "new you" Keep smiling

ah... so you wore your synthetic wigs with some hair, and good experiences. That is comforting! obviously, from my pics, you can see I have short and thin hair. If wigs do better on a bald or buzzed head, I would have no problem going that route, but if it's no different on the hair I have, then I may keep some hair... haven't fully decided yet. I am also still considering shaving my head (for a cause) just to see what it's like and to see if I would enjoy that option as well. So much to consider... All I know is that I'm ready for a change and looking forward to feeling more confident one way or the other.

I am glad to hear you are feeling better, and looking forward to the added confidence, I have no doubt whatever you decide, you will do with style.
