Hello everyone. I am now just six weeks in to being diagnosed with Alopecia Areata. I am working on accepting what is happening and the possibility that the hair I once had and loved might never return. How do you prepair for something that might be just fine but then again might not? I wish I could just see into the future and find out what is in store for me, you know? I feel like my hair loss is moving really fast. Two months ago I had normal thick hair and now it is thin and I have 4 bald spots. I feel like this is just starting yet maybe very soon I wont be able to just "hide it" by changing my hair part anymore. Is it normal for AA to progress this fast?
My doctor has discussed treatment options and having injections done if my insurance will cover it. This is scary too because I know it will probably hurt and there is no real guarentee that it will even work, right? I just don't know what to do. Who has tried the injections and what is your experience/thoughts on it? I am really in need of advice right now. This is still so new to me and I do not really know what is best to do.
My daughter used steroids the first time and it grew back. She used sulfasalazine the second and had a reaction so we had to take her off. The shots work for some people so it may be worth a try. It is unpredicatable. Get a good wig on hand to prepare for the worse. I have reasonable site from China if you need it. You have to live one day at a time, there are no guarantees with this. Losing the hair is the hardest part. I am so sorry.
I tried the injections. It worked but the doctor said that it did not work as well as it could have. Because of the shots I have hair for the first time since I was 13. My alopecia started when I was 4 and it progressed in spells. It started out small, grew back, and then fell out worse. The shots were my first hope to grow my hair back. I started them about a year ago and I did 6 treatments. My hair is falling out again but my doctor tells me that my alopecia is very aggrassive. Honestly the shots are worth a try. It will hurt but its a matter of deciding whether the pain for a little while is worth the chance of your hair growing back in.
i never believe that having any treatment is worth it as it will help in the short term but as soon as u stop any treatment it will propbably fall out again. I lost my hair 3yrs ago within 3wks it fell out rapid. I never ever thought id accept it as I didnt feel right without any hair but instead of dealing with it i got myself a wig and hid behind it. i then felt ashamed to tell anyone as I hated not knowing what they really thought about my bald head, but since august 2011 i have had my hair come back and its now about 3inches long :) which i am very pleased about and i like sharing my story as it lets people know there is still hope for ur hair coming back. I know it fall out again and i hope that i would be prepared this time but i only used steriod cream to stop my scalp from being itchy ect. I believe just keeping urself well and healthy and making sure ur immune system is in working order and u may get ur hair back. Hope ur doing ok though. x
I've had the steroid injections....for me they were painful. I'm doing the DPCP treatment now. It's been 2 months...nothing. I'm considering stopping the treatment. If after another month or so and no response, I'm not continuing. I'm very skeptical on putting chemicals on my head that doesn't guarantee a result. Due to the nature of alopecia and the spontaneous regrowth, I think I want to leave it up to nature. I wear wigs, got my second one today, and wear my hats when I don't feel like wearing the wigs. As Lynne Bruton, I had rapid hair loss leaving me almost completely bald in 3 weeks.
Hi Anne Emm. So sorry you're going through this. I'm 47 and it started for me about almost 6 months ago with bald patches on the top, back and sides of my head. I've done/tried Just about everything. I've had 5 rounds of the injections. I do not find them painful. the needle is very fine and does not go deep into the skin. just a lot of "pokes" but they don't bother me. I do have a lot of new growth in the oldest patches and even though I still lose a lot of hair every day, I'm growing some in. Have you tried using Rogaine? Best of luck with whatever you decide!
Injections are useless. Accept the scalp! :)
