a while back, i went to a genetics doctor, cant remember what they call them.
i wanted to know more about alopecia and my dna.
i guess you could say i'm a special case, i have an identical twin sister who doesnt have alopecia.
she is also really scared about getting it! i am scared she will get it, one, because she isnt as strong as me.
and two because i like being the only one!!! haha
so the Dr said she has a 55% chance of getting it.
also i wanted to know what chance my children will get alopecia. since for me its in my immune system, its not because of stress or lack of something or too much of something else.
its right in there and to get rid of it i would have to do drastic stuff.

sooooo.. i get off track easy..... the dr said my child would have about 2% chance of having a predisposition for it and then they would need a trigger to set it off, i have heard of such "triggers" being as simple as ppl straightening their hair!

it would be good to know if any alopecians have had alopecian kids. not that i mind so much having a cute baldy kid but i would care just like my mum cares about me being bald, for my mental and emotional and social welbeing.

We are trying for a kid now and it just gets ya thinkin about this stuff.

also i have been watching heaps of vids on alopecia, some make me cry. I'm going to buy a new wig this week. i buy from wigs.com usually occationally i buy from places in aus. but i find it hard to find a good auburn which is my natural colour.

i want a freedom wig badly! but all the savings are going towards the mortgage!

My dad has aa.... so do I... I have 2 brothers and none of them have alopecia. Do not know if my kids will get alopecia but this is because I've been blessed by adoption ;-)

Never heard of straightening hair as being a trigger factor... a chemical can be a trigger factor as well as a virus or stress.... in genetic, a trigger factor is something that will allow/help a gene to express a certain protein or will modifiy the gene so the protein will be different from what it is supposed to be... in the case of an auto-immune disease such as alopecia, this protein will be recognized as foreign, even if it has been sythetised by us...

Hi Alison,
I have 3 sons and none of them have Alopecia, they all have lovely hair ( all 3 have different colours and hair texture) The only thing one of them has is Eczema which I had as a child, but I now only get a bit of dermatitis on my hands occasionally.

Hi Alison,

a 55% chance of your sister getting it? Do you have any more information on how he came to this conclusion? My sister and I would be really interested :)
