Getting sympathetic looks is one thing...

but having a card posted through your door is another. A mother of a boy I used to go to school with posted a card through my door this morning saying the family was thinking and praying for me and that God would heal me. I'm assuming she has seen me out and about in a headscarve but still most people know I have alopecia. I don't know what to say as it looks like she thinks I have cancer or something but it would be rude if I tried to correct her and she'd actually known I had alopecia. I'm pretty sure though that she has jumped to the wrong conclusion.

Tape an alopecia info sheet down low on your door for next time, and send one to her. She can make her own conclusions and apologies.

Definitely correct her. You can thank her for her concern, but assure her you're healthy. I like the idea of sending her an AA info sheet.

A guy in a store today made my day...he complimented me on my bald look more than once, and it was sincere. For all the pitying cancer questions and double-takes I get, there are these people who say nice things.

Remember - people's reaction to your appearance is THEIR problem. You're fine.

Yeh I agree its there problem but at the same time I'm not angry at this lady. She was showing concern and kindness which not a lot of people always do but I like your ideas everyone, thanks. I hate people thinking I have cancer, I feel like a fake or a liar when I know I'm not.

As alopecians, we can only get past the "chemo" stereotype by correcting one person at a time. Some people will accept the correction and become more aware, others will stubbornly stick to their own conclusions, however false they may be. But as long as you have told the person who sent you the card about alopecia, then you've done your part.

P.S. I pray every day for a cure for alopecia -- prayer changes things and faith moves mountains. Everyone is standing in the need of prayer, and I take every prayer for healing that I can get!

Don't get me wrong I agree with praying too. I was raised as a Christian. I juts don't want people praying for the wrong thing.

Honey, healing is healing -- let them pray for what THEY want you to have; God knows what you need. That's the point I'm trying to make.
